I, too, had the misfortune of traveling through Jena once. Me and a fellow agent (who is Hispanic) were tasked to drive from Dallas to Natchez, MS to meet a contact. We stopped in Jena to get gas and you should've seen this scene.

People were staring at us like we had just landed an alien spacecraft. It was the craziest thing I've ever seen. In my ten minutes there I heard, "You're not from around here, are you?" three times. While using the bathroom my Latino coworker, a federal agent, was told, "You oughta disappear from here by sundown."

I forever associate Jena with that encounter. I have known a few people from Jena growing up in Hammond and they were all the same way.
