That's the problem they all have. Especially if you live in coastal areas.

I do not recommend Lennox. I have 2 units, have had to get my upstairs unit serviced 10 times in the last 3 years. Some under warranty some not. I've dealt with Lennox direct and they are clueless.

about to replace my Rheem unit that was installed in my home in 1995. Changed the inside coils about 4 years ago.
Just started losing freon this past year, so I decided to buy a new unit.
Buying a new Rheem 3.5 ton 16 SEER unit with heat strip on line for $2214.00
Local guy is going to do the install.
Cheapest I found local was $5300 installed.

as long as it is ruud/rheem (they are pretty much the same thing made by the same company), lennox, or trane you have a good reliable name brand.
then comes the 2nd tier brands like amana and bryant which are just a little below the others.
then comes the 3rd tier economy brands like york, goodman, luxaire, which are cheap units usually put into rental properties that work well, but are not very high quality. these are also the most common ones installed by generic home builders doing whole sub divisions
my personal choice would be ruud/rheem or trane, i just had a ruud installed at a house i am renovating.
i worked 35 yrs as an a/c & htg tech

Where are you located? Our bid for the 5 ton RUUD 14 seer with heat pump was more than your local install price.
(Don't know that we need/want heat pump but he gave an estimate to replace what we currently have -- lol my husband was fishing so I was here to deal with it)

Stay away from Goodman
I have Goodman in my primary residence (3 units), and in 7 rent houses. Ranging in age from 3-8 years. Never had a problem with any of them.

South of Lafayette.
Desormeaux AC gave us the installed price. That was for a 3.5 ton 14SEER A/C unit not a heat pump.
Heat pumps were in the $6200-7000 range.
I think that is pretty good for a local company, I just wanted to save some bucks so I looked on line. Hoping this does not bite me in the butt.
Fond a place on ebay budgetairsupply that sells Rheem and Goodman.
The new Rheem unit was the same exact physical size as my old unit. I am hoping this will simplify the replacement.

I come here for the pissy contractor slap-fights.
Regardless of brand, if it's installed correctly It'll last 12-15 years usually. I'm from a family plumbing, electrical and HVAC supply house business, but I didn't take it over, my brother did. He sells two or three brands IIRC but it really doesn't matter. Ruud, Trane, Carrier, American Standard... whatevs.
Tankless water heaters however...

I have American standard AC and heating. I like it. I had a couple of issues with the blower, but all was replaced under warranty, At the time I received a ten year parts and labor warranty, and a 12 year compressor warranty.
American Standard is the same as Trane, as mentioned earlier.
I suggest buying from a manufacturer approved installer.
One thing that impressed me was that the dealer had a high ranking employee come out to check the install a week after it was done to ensure nothing was half assed. I did not know this until the install was finished.
I got it for cheap at the time, a similar system now is nearly double. I think the dealer was deeply discounting against all competitors to gain market share, and make money on annual contracts. I lucked out.

Brand is more or less irrelevant. The most complicated part is the compressor and the compressors are usually contracted out anyway.
By far, the most important part of any HVAC system is the install and the charge.

Get a 3rd estimate from Central Heating and Air(if you're in BR)...they deal with Trane and I promise their quote will knock your socks off

I've read York is manufacturing the best units these days.
This. York or any of the JCI products are seriously over built at this time. I'm also a fan of the Rheem/Ruud products, however they "may" be having some issues. They've had a rash of failed AHRI tests recently so there could be a manufacturing issue needing resolving. Trane has the best advertising in the business. It's not a bad product but it's not worth the extra dollars being charged. Goodman/Amana, since being purchased by Daikin, now builds a high quality product. If you venture near Carrier products, stick with the Infinity line or exit stage left. Their products are weak. Also, stay away from micro-channel products.
At the end of the day, get a good quality product and a damn good installer. Your installer can make a a good unit look bad. I great installer can make most units perform great.
I manufacture a/c equipment for all of the leading brands. I test everyone's equipment.

I have a Ruud and have had to have the coil replaced twice in 4 years. Would not buy again.

Very cheap Chinese or Mexican capacitors are used by the major players. Global capacitors are the best. They also come with a two year warranty which is not the standard industry warranty. It's just a damn good capacitor.
