Back to the OP’s question.
You can taper off ANY psychiatric medication safely as long as it’s under medical supervision and done in a slow manner.
The worst ones to try and taper are Effexor and Paxil. Those can make patients miserable and have migraines, strange dreams, mood swings, etc.
Fortunately for you, Prozac is a great medication to taper. (Paige is correct) The active ingredient in it is Norfluoxetine which has an almost 7 day half life. You should not have any problems stopping in a relatively short amount of time. If you have been on it for 20 years, you want to taper monthly. Not for safety purposes but in order to find the lowest possible dose you can take and still feel good. (Hopefully that dose is zero).
Your instincts are correct. Talk with your psychiatrist. They will give you a smooth taper schedule. If they won’t, change doctors.
