Newport Rhode Island is nice and the mansions are incredible but prepare to spend some money. I would suggest another place with a side trip to Newport, only about 40/50 minutes from Boston depending on traffic.
Right about Cape Code, can get really crowded but can stop in a lot of towns, sometimes hard to get around and you may not be directly on water at a lot of places.
Kennebunkport is very nice and would highly recommend. Only about 50 minutes from Logan Airport and a good spot to be if you want to venture further up north in Maine.

I work in Newport and this is accurate. It's also much more crowded in the summer for obvious reasons. But it's a beautiful area.
Not-so-subtle brag, but this is my view from my office:

Kennebunkport is an awesome place. The beaches are small and scattered though. They are also highly influenced by the tides, something we really don't see in the Gulf. You go from having hundreds of yards of beach to no beach whatsoever.

Abita, have you been to Block Island?

Portland, ME. It's more of a small city than a town though.
Bar Harbor is a good choice.

I actually have not. It's been on my list for a while and haven't had the chance yet. I hope to go soon though, I always hear great things.
