H&R Pardner. 870 clone, built like a tank. $200 bucks. I have one, and bought one for my parents house. No reason to spend more money for home defense.

100%.

I have never shot a pistol grip 12 gauge but I can only imagine it would be completely miserable, not to mention inaccurate to the point of being useless.

Why they even exist is beyond me.

A subcompact for home defense probably isn't the best choice.

It's not my first choice for home defense, but I am trying to think of guns that are easy to handle for an inexperienced shooter.

Revolver. Maglite. Put them in the drawer of your bedside table. You'll always be ready for whatever goes bump in the night.

For any gun. You should be able to completely disassemble, clean, and reassemble.

Agreed. What’s the point if you are fumbling around in the dark while someone is rummaging through your house? Know how to use your gun.

I have a Springfield Armory XD 9mm Subcompact. Great gun, easy to handle.

For home defense I prefer a full size pistol with a high capacity, stored in a biometric safe:

I also have my old youth model 870 express 20 loaded with buck shot in my full size gun safe. Only 2 guns that I keep loaded in my house, but both are locked up.

Smaller doesn't equal better. I can shoot my Glock 17 far better than my Shield because my 17 is much less snappy due to the heavier weight (both are in 9mm).

Had an issue about a week ago. Not willing to discuss but what is better a pistol or a shotgun?

I've got a disease. I'm not going to tell you what it is, but how I do I get better??

I would recommend you go shoot different handguns and get the one with which you are most comfortable and proficient. Asking random people what best works for you is foolish. This isn't a one size fits all or what-TV-is-best type subject

I understand what you're saying, but he's asking about home defense. If there was ever a one size fits all for home defense, it is a shotgun.

My concealed carry is a Glock 43 and that thing is pretty snappy for a 9mm. I prefer shooting my Colt 1911 which is what I use for home defense. It's just too damn big to carry with me.

This might have been mentioned, but I didnt make it past the nerf gun.

870 is a great platform. Get the extended tube on it and the additional rounds on the side mount. I know some folks who put bird shot as the first round, followed by a couple of buck shot and then finally a low recoil slug. Depending on your nuisance and if you dont want to kill anyone, that's not a bad option.

I dont have a problem defending my own, so I skipped the bird shot option. 4 00 buckshot and 1 slug. Keep it loaded.

Also, I carry around a smaller handgun. ALot of times, you might not have a chance to lug around a shotgun.

You can get used 870's for cheap and a decent handgun. I'd buy both if it means saving you and yours.

You don't want wall penetration (i.e. shoot someone sleeping in the next room) and you want to cover a bunch of area. Get a shotgun and load it with bird shot.

Birdshot will go through a standard wall, no problem

I've shot some 3 gun night matches and it's absolutely amazing how much of a difference there is between using a handheld flashlight and a weapon mounted light when it comes to target acquisition. Any slight skew in the angle of your handheld flashlight makes a huge difference just a few yards away. Plus it's one less hand to grip your weapon.

Yeah I've got a light/laser combo on my pistol that's pretty awesome and I can keep both hands on.
