2005 Toyota tundra needs a fix that is worth $1200 and its not a necessary fix if I don't put a ton of miles on it. The steering rack needs to be replaced as it is leaking. I have a hard time putting $1200 in truck that is worth $8000. Anyways I'm considering keeping it and buying a new car for my daily driver. What do y'all recommend for a new car that is reliable and won't break the bank?

ETA: This is coming only 3 months after replacing leaking gaskets and bellow boots.

TIA

Why not just get a steering rack from a low mileage one that is wrecked and put that in your truck?? No way that should cost $1200.

That's going to be a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a new car.

I’d probably buy an Accord if you want a sedan or a 4Runner if you are looking for an suv.

I'm pretty mechanically inclined but I don't know about changing the steering rack myself. If someone else has this problem I will change theirs for free if they buy the part and if holds up for 4 months I will do my own as well . I'm worried I would mess up one little thing and be going 75 down the interstate and my power steering would go out.

if your power steering went out at 75mph you probably wouldn't notice.

Changing a steering rack isn't very difficult if you've done other parts swaps on a car like an alternator or water pump.

A 2 payments on a $30k car is about the price of that steering rack. If the rest of the truck is good, this seems like an easy decision.

I guess I should of added that this is coming just 3 months after having leaking gasket replaced. Seems like the truck is starting wear down and I don't want to keep dumping money into it every 4 months.

Not to mention additional insurance

I mean if he really just wants to have 2 vehicles I don't think we're going to talk him out of it. I have 2 and it's convenient for me because I work on the road and I have something to drive when I get home.
