Most of the grad programs have the book costs built in now too, the books are rarely used so instead of the market drying up bc students realize they don’t need the books they just frick you from the source now
Mine isn’t built in but you are forced to buy new because you need the “access code.”

State Senator Mike Walsworth from Monroe has a bill this session that attempts to tackle some of the college textbook issues. The bill seeks to have college libraries acquire textbooks to be loaned out for free or minimal fee and for courses to be listed along with AER and OER. Southeastern La. Univ. testified in favor of the bill in Senate Ed. Cmte and were proud to say that they are one of only a few universities nationwide that have an "open textbook library".

I believe the professors get some kind of kickbacks for switching books
Is there a professor rating website where they could show how often they turnover editions of textbooks - hence, likelihood of kickbacks...

I had a book for a business class that was about 10x6 inches but it was about 4 inches thick. The paper was as thin as toilet paper. It was a bitch to carry around. Looked like a large bible

Textbooks have been a scam long before I remember. One of our professors made a ‘notes’ book for $100 that supplemented the textbook. We got a bunch of extra credit if we showed proof of purchase.
what the ever living FU*K if you did this in healthcare you would go to PRISON.

When I was taking classes to be able to sit for my boards, they had these stupid "modules" that were a course requirement for every course. They were literally just quizzes, but membership to be able to take and post my quizzes was $400!!!! Not for a textbook...for PRACTICE QUIZZES

That is what these access codes are for. To be able to take quizzes and whatnot.

I took a Labor Relations class for my Master's program back in 89. (I am old). We had to buy a book of legal cases for $200 to go along with the textbook. Never even opened that sucker up. Have it in storage, still looks brand new.

Went to school in the 70s. Organic professor told us that the new edition of the Morrison and Boyd text was out, but he had no problem if we used the previous edition because there wasn't much difference between the two. Only time I heard that in 4 years of college.
After a couple of years I was bitter about the high cost of resale of used books compared to the buy back price, so I decided to keep my books and not sell them back in protest.
Greedy bastards. I hate to see that it's still a racket 50 years later.

Ben Martin was the most pompous, closeted homo, wanna be CIA, nerd I had the displeasure of being taught by at LSU. The history department had plenty of douche bag, but Ben Martin was the biggest.
Actually, Charles Royster was the biggest. That baw could eat.

Lol Dr. Martin failed your arse. He was the most thorough and interesting professor at LSU by far.
ETA: he was extremely effeminate especially in his handling of the chalk with his probably custom chalk holder.

Academic publishers are the debbil.
This has been true for at least 30 years.
