Trust me, most people do not come to a complete stop in cars. I as a cyclists spend twice as much time in the 10 foot distance before a stop sign than a car does. Watch people. You will see its quite the norm for cars. And as far as an incinvenience, it is pretty big for a cyclist. You have to unclip. Nothing worth being unsafe over, but I am not being unsafe.
Stop with the rationalizations and claims that every car rolls through stops signs. It doesn't change your personal actions. I do lots of inconvenient stuff, like stoping at stop signs and red lights, because I appreciate safety and order in society. Obviously you think as long as you judge an action to be safe you don't need to obey the law. That's your decision and not much I can do about it. I hope you don't hurt yourself or anyone else.

Shut the frick up with your holier than thou bullshite. I'm not rationalizing anything. In fact I never said shite about me personally rolling through in a car... only on the bike. I'm observing. Same as you all observe that apparently every cyclist blows through stop signs. Pay attention instead of having such a hate for cyclists that you can only see what they are doing wrong. You are attacking my statements as a rationalization to hate cyclists. Watch a 4 way stop....easily 75% never come to a complete stop. The argument is purely to show that somehow it's not argued against for cars, but on a bike, you basically just committed treason. (And again, no referring to blindly blowing through.... but simply not coming to a full paused stop unless it's not my turn)
Trust me as a cyclist, you pay far more attention to a cars movements than cars do to bikes. I have had way more bad interactions done on to me by cars than vice versa. I drive by many bikes a day and rarely even notice an inconvenience. And this is the Houston metro area where there is more traffic than BR. No bike lanes either. If cars and bikes both don't act like morons, it's quite easy to share the roads.
I also 100% don't believe you when you act as though you don't roll through a stop sign on occasion.

Damn dude, it must be intense riding a bike, you gotta chiill out. I'm just tying to explain my rationale for obeying traffic laws that are inconvenient. There's thousands of people driving around at any given time. individually each person can probably make a safe decision without following strict rules, as a collective group it becomes much less likely.
Safe travels and hopefully you don't rear end me coming to a complete stop.

I'm a cyclist, and can't stand riding in the street. Sure, there are times when I have to use the road, in order to connect to other trails, but for the most part, I stay off. I don't understand the thinking of "I shouldn't have to stop at a red light, or stop sign", but again, I'm more concerned about my safety, and my surroundings anytime I'm on the road.

I've seen cyclists riding down the center turning lane on Perkins. Crazy.
Perkins is dangerous. Quite a few have been hit on there.
I used to live on Perkins and my bike route involved completely avoiding it!

I will jog on the side of the road, and Ill be damned if it isn't every other car flying by me at more than the speed limit and no care even to do the courtesy of just slightly moving over so their side view mirrors broadside me, even when there are no other vehicles on the road.
maybe you shouldn't be jogging on a road made for cars...I never see cars riding around on running tracks/trails/sidewalks

I would say that's most cyclist as well. I know every once in a while, there are those out there who are at a stop light or sign, assess the situation, feel it's okay to go, and don't care about following the law as they would in a car because they realize they will likely not get pulled over. I think that's wrong for sure. There's a lot going on in an intersection. (Don't get my "rolling" trough a stop sign confused. I'm slowing down to almost tipping over, if not actually stopping, just not putting my foot down. I'm trying to learn to track stand so I can actually pull it off at stop lights). But I think most cyclists aren't riding around like they are invincible. Most are doing everything possible to be safe.

I'm pretty sure I ran across some old posts by you on beginnertriathlete or slowtwitch (can't remember). Is that you posting over there? Could have been a really old post I pulled up in a search and the name caught my eye.

Cops did a good job for a while ticketing cyclists that ignored stop signs and traffic lights.
I stop at all...and use hand signals. I don't want to get hit and I want to show drivers what a good responsible cyclist does.

what kind of bike do you ride?
Pretty much only ride my Felt B12 tri bike. I have a cyclcross bike, but it's reserved to the trainer for now. Hoping to trade it up to a nicer road bike soon.

This is me as well. Most roads here have bike lanes alongside the road....even then I still won't ride on them if it's a busy road. Luckily I can ride through neighborhoods for the most part to get access to the walking/bike trails nearby, only having to cross busy streets with a crosswalk.

I watched a guy riding on the double yellow center line of a 50 mph highway with no shoulders the other day. He was trying to ride in between the traffic. I'm not defending stupidity. It's definitely out there.
And as far as busy roads, you will not see me on them. I think a guy is a jackass for riding on a busy road at rush hour same as everyone else. He may have a legal right to be there, but it's surely an a-hole move. However, I know drivers who think it's an a-hole move no matter what. It could be 7 a.m. on a Sunday and they are the only car on the road. Having to slow down to pass a guy is the end of the world and they are going to have a fit about how cyclists think they own the road.

Nice, I bought a Specialized Tarmac last summer, and love it. I was riding a Giant Defy until then.....huge difference.

My Perkins route is Pennington Biomedical Research sidewalk/parking lot that parallels Perkins, then I turn down Quail towards the LA Wildlife and Fisheries Building and use the Neighborhood to work my way west.

When we went to Lake Tahoe I saw soooo many cyclists riding along the side of the road that goes around the entire lake. Many times there is only maybe a few inches of shoulder, a guardrail and then drop off a cliff. Amazed me the amount of cyclists that didn't mind all the cars zooming past them, capable of sending them over a cliff at any moment.

Tarmac is on my short list along with the Venge, Felt AR3, or Cervelo S3. I like that it's pretty easy to find a Tarmac used since it's so popular.

Please change the thread title to "car hit by cyclist that didn't obey traffic laws on perkins road".

same here, and there are signs everywhere saying bikes can take up the whole lane, but I try to stay away as much as possible. There's a trail I ride (pretty much religiously) here, that is 35 miles round trip (90% is out of traffic), which is fine, because on the day's I go 50+, I can do laps.
