My wife's grandfather landed on Iwo Jima in WWII, he would hide under the kitchen table during thunderstorms

No. My father and all of my uncles were WW2 veteran with varying degrees of combat experience. Fireworks never bothered them.

They remind me of my horrific days at Gettysburg. The cannons burping in the distance. The drummer boy next door.
