Perfectly fine. The only thing she said she didn't like was that she had some older cousins there that gave her hell.

Cool. So as long as someone doesn't have older cousins that go to Southern Lab, it's a good choice.

But if I had kids I'd send them to Episcopal. It's by far the best school in the region.

We thought about it and had the connections, but it was not a fit for us. The price is nice for sure, but I did not like what the school looked like when I visited. It is all about the sports and the academics are not what they used to be when my dad and cousins went there - their commentary, not mine. They tried to recruit a fiends son to play sports and told him he had to take remedial courses when he enrolled in order to get in - kids parents said no way as he is a great student and wants to go to a great college.

We ended up at Episcopal and love that school so much. Schools of that caliber cost three times as much in the Northeast and do not have near the facilities and campus. It has been a real blessing to my family and kept us in Baton Rouge.

UHigh is a great school. Teachers are very well paid and they basically get their pick of the litter. I think the application deadline is Oct 8th. I have zero connections and 2 of mine got into Lab School, but they do hold the diversity card by being dual citizens and raised bilingual. You need to be able to show that your kids bring something to the table in terms of diversity and I'm sure connections wouldn't hurt.

We left Zachary for the same reasons. We felt the test scores were being fudged in some way

Have friends who did the same. Left Zachary for BR.

Have also heard numbers being fudged.

I think you are getting good impressions here:
hard to get in whether you believe it or not
tuition is better than most private schools
one a few nonreligious schools
can't speak to the academics..guessing better than public, on par with magnet? catholic?, dunham? not as good as episcopal
full range of athletics for typical HS experience

Put them in Ascension Christian. Great education offered.

I can vouch for that. Had my son at Ascension Christian. Really good school if you are close to that area.

Episcopal and Uhigh are the only schools I would consider for my children if I still lived in BR.Uhigh would be my first choice as most of my family are Alums. My parents sent me and my two siblings to Uhigh, and each of us loved our time there. Excellent athletics and academics. My parents are still very involved and as far as I know, never regretted the decision. The older I get, the more appreciative and thankful I am for my time at Uhigh. It helped me in more ways than I ever thought it could. Hell, just being an alum will open doors for you that otherwise would never open. As others have already said, it is very difficult to get in. Good luck.

Isn't the tuition tied to LSUs?

If so, what impact, if any, does the current LSU budget issues have on the lab school?

LSU lab is the first choice where we "would like" to send our son to when he gets of age.

Second is an academic magnet

Third is a catholic school.

All I know its hard as F to get into uHigh in the middle/high school grades.....unless your kid is a stud athlete. But that's another topic

Catholic and St. Joseph's both seem to have great reputations academically.

They are fantastic schools academically. Uhigh and Episcopal are on the same level IMO. Where they surpass the catholic schools, IMO, is in the overall quality of the experience. I was raised catholic and my parents still chose Uhigh. No gay bears or St. Joe Hoes in my family. Haha. Sure did love when those girls would show up at our parties though.

We are touring but leaning towards episcopal. Not looking forward to all the application processes but have been told it will not be bad if we go with episcopal.

I would start by seeing if you are eligible for the Baton Rouge Assembly. It will improve your chances dramatically. Good luck.
