He did not have much time to react at all. He had to do the safest thing for himself and get off. He did not throw it off. He tilted it to get off quickly.. He can't backup because who know what is behind him (even if there is nothing he will be doing what they did) and he can't just assume the right side is safe either.. He didn't have much choice given the time..
