You can get a cabin (condo) in the woods and have a wonderful, relaxing family time in a beautiful place.

I highly recommend doing this. That way you can go down into town for all the family activities but at the end of the day you can retreat back to the peace and quiet of your cabin.

bingo...beautiful place...the alpine coaster in Pigeon Forge is new and very cool....check it out...AND....fricking Ole Smokey Moonshine tasting...DO IT!!!

rustled a few jimmies I see..

Look the park is nice, and you can rent a newer cabin for relatively cheap. Outside of the park, its really cheesy and touristy in a bad way.

I'd prefer a week in Asheville, North Carolina. Same scenery, more stuff to do without the cheese factor.

I'll echo some of the sentiments already posted in this thread. Galtliburg is an excellent place to go, if you do it the right way. Rent a nice cabin, there are more than a few luxury rentals in the area.

Focus on the outdoors. Go hiking, raft or tube, see some wild life, DO NOT go with the intention of visiting hokey museums and pancake parlours. If you feel like eating a nice meal, just take the short trip up to Knoxville, try out Market Square or the Old City.

Your approach was a bit off putting that's why.. Instead of being complete arse hat from the get go you should have just started with what you just said

it is a good family vacation spot.

Bingo. Two main things I look for in a family vacation.

1. Things that my kids want to do (call me crazy but as a father, one thing I love to do on vacation is watch my children have fun)

and

2. A good atmosphere that allows me to chill out, relax, and have some time for the Mrs. & me.

Gatlinburg/ Pigeon Forge has both.

I would Google cabin rentals. There's several different leasing companies, just check them out and see which one looks best for you. Most of them have their offices near the strip, and you can just stop by and grab the keys when you get there.

The Titanic museum is pretty cool if you've never been.

There is also Dollywood (think Six Flags in the Smokies). Ripley's and a really cool Titanic museum. Of course you also need to set aside some time to go on a guided hike, zip-line tour, and/or helicopter tour. Then there's white water rafting as well if that's your thing. Another thing that the kids will probably like is the indoor skydiving place. And for the Mrs, there also a big outlet mall.

I thought this was a joke post at first

Have you tired the Davy Crockett Whiskey Tour and tasting? I did this last Thanksgiving while we were there and it was awesome.

I remember being 18 and riding through Gatlinburg and pigeon forge. I was totally shocked. Ripley's, haunted houses, wax museums, medieval shows, mirror mazes as far as the eye can see.. Pigeon forge must have had more go cart towers than the entire florida panhandle. I had no idea there were places like that when I saw it

Yep kids aren't born jaded and postmodern, they don't give a shite about "trashiness" or "cheesiness". They just want to have fun. That's a good thing.

My 12 year old was dying to visit this place as soon as he saw it while we drove by last Thanksgiving. I guess it is a bit eye catching to a kid....

And I must say it was really cool. We all enjoyed it and now my 5 year old girl is totally fascinated by anything to do with the Titanic. They had the school book fair a month or so ago and she bought three different books on it.

A 50 year old Leonardo DiCaprio is going to swipe her V-card. I guarantee it. Don't let go, Jack!
