When we were there last year it was over the Thanksgiving holiday. I remember seeing a very high number of LSU fans there. Not sure if there was some sort of alumni convention or what but there was a ton of LSU folks. I remember the day we went to Dollywood was the day of the LSU vs. Arkansas game. I've got the CBS Sports App on my Iphone so I was able to walk around the park and actually watch the game live on my phone. At one point me and 3 LSU fan dads were huddled around my Iphone while all our wives and kids were in a show. It was pretty cool.

My family of LSU fans went many times when I was a kid, and we're barely trashy at all

When I moved to Louisiana I was really surprised at how many people went there for vacation.

Hike some of the trails in the park
Visit Alewine Pottery on the artist's loop
At least a 1/2 hour Scenic Helicopters tour
Drive to Cade's Cove early in the morning
We almost always stay at the Best Western Twin Islands right in the middle of Gatlinburg. It isn't very noisy at night, and you're in walking distance to all of the cheesy tourist traps.
Eat a huge breakfast because all other cooking is horrible.
There are a few good restaurants that are always packed: The Park Grill and The Peddler Restaurant

If you are talking about last Thanksgiving (2013) the LSU fans that were not in Gatlinburg were in Orlando at Disney. Why do LSU folks vacation at Thanksgiving. I'm just as guilty and have no reason.

I pretty much lived in the park when I lived in Knoxville. Love the park, hate the tourist garbage that is sevierville/pigeon forge/gatlinburg and the people it brings to the park.
If you been passed by a dirt bike flying through cade's cove hoping the ditch and such, it's likely it was me or another member of this board.

Drove through there once. Traffic really sucks.

Yep. We were up there for Thanksgiving and of all the SEC teams I saw represented, I'd say LSU may have actually come in #1. It was to the point I honestly though there had to be some sort of LSU centered event going on up there.

Did you start on a mnt road in maryville that was normally closed to traffic? It went into cades cove. I did that a few times while in college. I liked Norris Damn or Panther Creek for trail rides. The foothill parkway wasn't that bad either and had nice scenery.

I went for Mardi Gras this year. It was basically Louisiana w/ mountains.
The touristy areas can be crowded and a bit tawdry, but there is a lot to see and do when you get off the strip. Go get yourself a broom and hiking stick at Ogle's Broom Shop

The park is nice, the rest is just redneck christian garbage..
Ill go with this when talking about Pigeon Forge.
Gatlinburg is nicer though.
Pigeon Forge is turning in to Branson Part 2.
We are supposed to go to Gatlinburg next week. We will spend approximately, 100% of our time in the park. Only other place we will go is the brewery restaurant place and the hole in the wall winery.

I highly recommend going by the Davy Crockett Whisky store in Gatlinburg for a tasting while you're there.

what do you do spending 100% of your time in the park. Me and the wife are heading back up in august. We go do a couple trails, laural falls and such, but curious of what all else you can do in the park for so much time

If you're looking for nothing but a mountain retreat without all the tourist stuff, especially if you're coming from Louisiana, cut about two hours off your drive and go to Mentone, AL.
And here is the main intersection in town....

During thanksgiving there is a football tournament and a few Louisiana teams play there.
That is probably why there are so many LSU shirts.
Gatlinburg is great for kids. If you can't enjoy it then you are probably like the neighbors on natl lampoons Christmas Vacation.

I can appreciate Gatlinburg for what it is. The Pigeon Forge area is just rather ugly, though.
