I don't really see the point of mentioning a grocery store that's in another town. But go figure.

Also, that Rouses location isn't that great.

No point in shopping there when Calandro's, Alexander's, and Matherne's are so close. Baton Rouge has very good independent grocery markets all over town. Also, that Jefferson/Corporate Whole Foods location is one of the better ones that I've seen. Most of the Whole Foods we have out here are not that big and fancy.

I appreciate the insight on the independently owned stores. I wouldn't have even thought to look at those. I'll give those 3 a shot.

I feel for anyone who shops at a store not named HEB.

A large number of east BR residents shop there.

How so?

Its their new store models. Typically the rouses that are remodels are the ho hum ones.

Yeah, the good Calandro's at Perkins and Essen has a great beer selection, nice produce and meat. The prices aren't as good as the chain stores, but they aren't way out of whack like Whole Foods. Of course, when I go there, I'm buying a few craft beers and meat for a special occasion. I'm not going to get stuff for a quick Wednesday night dinner or to bring to work for lunch.

In my opinion, Leblanc's offers the best products for the money.

Surprised no one mentioned Calvins Bocage Market. They have great service. I guess in the same vein as Calandro's, Alexanders and LeBlanc's- whatever is closest.
Maxwells has awesome meat.
Whole Foods still the best in town.

That's my point. It's certainly not a neighborhood grocery store. Driving twenty to thirty minutes out of the way for groceries seems a bit ridiculous when you have Calandros, Alexandras, Whole foods & Leblanc's intown

Well there are plenty of Dollar General Stores you could shop at.

I get basics and dry goods at WD on Siegen. The recently renovated and it's very nice. Get meat at Calandros.

Rouses is a fine store, but your post is far, far from accurate. I wouldn't shop there unless I lived near it.

I fully stand by it too. It's far better than the AG stores in BR. It's better than whole foods due to selection not being restricted. For anyone in the O'Neal area it's Walmart, Target or Rouses but I guess you know better being in Atlanta

I would rank BR metro as

1. Rouses
2. Whole Foods
3. Fresh Market
4. Calandros
5. LeBlancs
6. Calvins
7. Mathernes

1. Whole Foods

2. LeBlancs (Drusilla)

3. Calandros

4. Winn Dixie (fuel perks)

I can't stand shopping at HEB. I don't see the appeal but people in Houston are all about it.

I will say this. The opening of the Walmart on Burbank is the best thing that ever happened to my shopping experience at Albertsons across the street.
