Probably has more to do with the current events.
Every where I see media, news, etc telling my not to be racist, but I need to acknowledge ones race 1st as if it is some type of quality. Which is in direct conflict with not being racist.

Yea, my dad is from Africa and my mom is from America. So I'm fairly positive that makes me African American based on genetics
But apparently only certain types get to claim African American for scholarships and stuff.

Yeah, I thought they included female as well. Either way I don't think it's that confusing on it's face, I think the phrasing in the OP made it more confusing than it really is

Eh, that's a reach. When the AA term first gained popularity, it represented a huge step forward BECAUSE it officially recognized said demographic as Americans.
