This. You may need to "express" them manually. If you're squeamish get a groomer to do them.

What are you feeding him?
Posted on 3/4/15 at 11:12 pm to Homey the Clown
Put him on a raw diet and he will lose that kibble scent. My three have no dog scent while on raw, but when I switch them back to kibble they smell terrible.

Raw diet? Please explain.

Just like you'd assume, raw chicken, pork, meats in general along with bone and organ. Your dog will also never be healthier if you do go that route.
They also make pre-made/freeze dried foods. They're nice, especially for travel as you just add water, but in the long term are bad for their teeth. They really need to chew bone to keep their teeth healthy and strong.

quote:If it's a dog smell and not a nasty arse smell, this is a good place to start. Especially with Bassett Hounds (I've had four). Get some ear cleaning solution at the pet store and knock that out whenever you bathe the dog. Repeat every few weeks (between baths). Works wonders.
I have to clean my dog's ears regularly or he stinks. He's apparently prone to ear infections. Neither of us enjoy the process, but it takes care of the problem.

Isn't that wonderful? Our staffordshire never needs a bath either. She smells great year round. I would hate to have OP's problem.

spray him down with turpentine. roman soldiers used to soak their tired bodies in it...turpentine is made from fir trees sap. and if you bother to search, you'll find it was an old time remedy throughout the ages. and it can be drunk...only a tsp tho.
after time to dry, then wash with doggy suds and dry him.
OR, ,mix up baking soda, like 3-4 cups and water, and soak the pooch. baking soda is known to absorb odors. anyways....let the baking soda dry, then rinse the pooch off with warm water and dry.
you could try bentonite clay, it will also absorb odors, use it like the baking soda
the end

Has anyone mentioned purging his anal glands?
Posted on 3/5/15 at 11:41 am to Motorboat
There's no way in hell I'm doing anything involving a dog's arse hole. He's on his own with that.

Whoa, got anything to back this up? If you do please post link.
OP: Any or all of the comments about skin infections, ear infections, and anal sacs could cause a dog to smell bad. Or it could be a congenital skin disease. Does he itch/scratch/lick anywhere excessively? Is this skin red anywhere or any rashes? Hair loss? Is he excessively scaly? Need more than "my dog smells" to help you here.

I'm sticking with my "hounds stink" stance.

I agree that many of them do but there's usually a reason.

There are vitamins from Petco that help.
