MIT for STEM
Harvard for pre-Law
Princeton for anything other than pre-Law and STEM
I’m not having kids though so I’m going to keep my money and do DINK things

Just like Harvard and the other ivy leagues, few pay full price for Stanford, if your kid can get accepted there is a lot of need based aid available. Running some numbers on their financial aid calculator it looks like a family of for with a household adjusted gross income of $125,000, a average house and some savings, can get the out of pocket cost down to $15-20,000 per year.
At this point a number of very high end schools are charging very little (based on family income of $160k) for students to attend. These institutions are well endowed and committed to democratizing higher education.
A few schools that are very elite and prolly off most people on this board’s radar include:
Tufts
Brandeis
Williams College
Reed College
Carnegie Mellon
Drexel
Smith College
William and Mary
Washington University
York College of Pa
Washington and Lee
Franklin and Marshall

The USCGA is a very underrated academy. It’s also free, and your biggest obligation is that you have to serve in the coast guard. New London, CT isn’t the worst town ever and Connecticut College is just down the road. The owner of Jacques-Imos on Oak Street is a graduate of there. It’s a small school that competes in D-III athletics and only offers about 8 majors.

Ivy is an athletic conference. Has nothing to with the whether the school is good or not.
But they are good schools. Very good schools.

I don't have any kids and know nothing about raising them but here is an odd idea.
How about the one they want to go to?
The only thing I would offer advice about is avoiding bullshite majors that are a waste of money.

I worked with an MIT grad that was a well known public figure in the Nagin administration.
He is as dumb as a box of rocks.

I’m sure you’re just trolling but what do you mean with your response? I assume the Air Force wouldn’t take you so you’re just bitter.

If he's going to a place like Stanford or Harvard and knows how to network and market himself, you won't need to worry about being taken care of when you retire.
But no school can guarantee success. Teach him how to market himself while he gets his education, and he'll do well no matter where he goes. There are plenty of Harvard grads who don't do particularly well and plenty of directional state university grads who do much better.

I would also add Notre Dame and Michigan. Phenomenal academic schools with strong athletic programs.

I will add UT-Austin, which is where I went.

I once worked for a guy that eventually made partner at a NYC equity investment firm, there were a couple of dozen partners all were graduates of Harvard, Yale, Brown, etc, but my friend really stood out next to his picture and name were his alma mater "Arkansas State University".
