Pretty sure that whoever installed them made sure it was legal first, either by checking existing law or making new law.

Remember a story eight or nine years ago about a lady owing them over $20K. Most of it was fines for not paying.

In Texas they are
I had to pay them $962.00 once so I could get my new car registration.

Usually if you call NTTA, they'll cut it in half when you first register.

The bigger question is why do they bother with the automatic toll reader if they can just photograph your license place and send you a bill in the mail.
Toll roads of been the norm for much of the East Coast for decades. In New Jersey there is one every couple of miles each town gets revenue from it

Because the NTTA RFID Tag is used for toll roads and airports.
And significantly easier to find someone and charge. I have my credit set up for automatic charges.

No problem paying the toll it just seems odd or not right having to pay to use a publicly funded road.
Oh,and thanks for the English class guys,

It was your choice to take the toll road by doing so you agreed to pay the price to use the road.

It’s a toll road. Everyone on the road is paying, you are no different. You can get an ez pass, pay with cash and/or coins, or have the bill mailed to you. If you want to drive on the free roads change the settings in your Waze app to avoid toll roads.

Agreed, but this is Interstate 65. I have used other toll roads that have made travel easier and was glad to pay. I have always been under the impression that toll roads were privately owned.

Not true. Katy freeway is a perfect example. If you want the convenience of using the toll lanes down the middle of I-10 then you pay for it. Otherwise you sit in the bumper to bumper traffic in the other 10 lanes.

I guess my argument is I have already payed for my right to use the road by paying the taxes on my gas purchases to the government that built the road. There were signs advising about a toll road ahead but we never went through any toll booth, I guess it is all electronically and photographicaly controlled.

Come on man. There are huge signs over the interstate every few miles to let you know you are in a photograph toll lane. They were designed to avoid having to stop and pay with cash and allow traffic to flow better. Your excuse that you didn’t see any toll booths so it should be free doesn’t hold water.

Not my argumenet at all, If i had an argumeny it would be tolls should not be charged on publicly funded roads through the gas tax which we all pay.

I only saw one sign each way, could have been more.

Your gas tax gets you an economy seat in the cattle section. If you want to fly first class you pay more.

Pay by mail tolls are becoming more common. I drive all over the US and am running into more and more of them. The thing I don't like is the toll increases by a good bit and I have to be sure I don't throw them out as junk mail.
Tolls are pretty rare in the South and West, the NE and Illinois. Some of the PA Turnpike tolls can run over $20, I think end to end the Jersey Turnpike is over $20 now.

So you saw the sign? Did you need more signs to think they were serious?

There are also four bridges that cross the Ohio River from Louisville to Indiana.
No tolls on the other three, and plenty of opportunity and signage to change course before proceeding across the toll bridge.
