in response to your very general, sweeping statement? sure

What was your "gifted" class curriculum?
math, english, and some social studies. the rest was regular schooling

Where you, or where you not, prepped to take the ACT?
no. we were taught math. that math was on the ACT
i didn't buy any books or go to any classes (and neither did anyone else)

My son has never made a B in high school. He's taken 6 or 7 AP classes and aced all the final tests. None of those classes are math however, AP math of any substance is not offered. He has a 26 on the ACT but his math score is severely lacking compared to the other disciplines ( 28 or higher on everything but math 22 or 23 on Math). He said there is things on the math portion if the ACT he has never seen. I can see the other guys story being valid.

I wish I would have prepped more. I graduated in 96, so pre TOPS. I needed a 28 for a full scholarship to NLU, 27 got me a partial scholarship.
Barf...graduated Scotlandville Magnet in 96
But I was a poor little white girl living in the hood though.

unless something major has changed, math is the only portion of the ACT that requires particular schooling/knowlege
i can't remember the exact cutoff but a good basis in trig is important. i think there are some other scattered advanced math/pre-calc concepts but the main "step" is to get through trig and understand it

When I took it it was also slo. I believe there is some pre-calc and trig on it now. Many schools don't teach that.

The irony that you have this as your avi
But advocating free education through tax dollars. What happened to personal responsibility and people ensuring their children college funds are secure. Instead people go by $60000 bay boats and F250's and let the tax payers pay to educate their children.

my avi is a joke, but it's also more directed at fedgov
i'm not libertarian enough to be called a libertarian these days, but i'm not an anarchist. i'm a minarchist federal with much larger powers for state and local governments (with certain liberties that can't be infringed by either)
this is a state program so i have no issue with it. if you have an issue with this program, move to a state without one
i'm all for this, too. go back to the pre-TOPS system of scholarships. prices for schools will fall, too, so poor people can more easily pay their own way
what is not ok to me is making this program limited by income. it just makes no sense, especially given the demos and goals

Advanced math which is basically Algebra 3 is the highest math offered at my sons high school (my HS also). Zero exposure to trig or pre-calc concepts. Math portion of ACT has changed since I took it and probably since you took it.

You can't run from group thinking it will spread unless someone speaks out against it.
This was not solely directed at you, but I just find it funny when people cry out about social responsibility and in the same breath begin to cry when they lose their government funding.

My sons school which was also mine does not. The good students in his class destroy all the non-math portions of the ACT but do mediocre at best on the math. They just don't have the background. I've been bitching about it to the school board for 4 years.

what the f?
no calculus?

well yeah you can do that, too. i'm not making political dissent illegal or anything. i was speaking in terms of my avatar

i do, too
but it is theoretically possible that government does enact policies that help the state. TOPS (esp with a higher minimum) MAY do that

Exactly. That is just insane. My high school(granted it was a magnet school) we had to take a math, science, and English class every year...even if we already met the state requirements to graduate. So that meant you were taking Geometry, Algebra, Trig, and Calculus. You couldn't leave school early your senior year either.

Imagine that, some schools are better at preparing their kids than others. What a crazy arse idea.

Truth Slo. This is in Calcasieu parish also. Not bragging but my son can learn any concepts he's exposed too (way harder worker than I ever thought about being). His math background is severely lacking but he's earned 21 LSU credits in Science, English, and History, yet he will be taking Trig as his first math class at LSU. That's why I think raising the ACT to 22 while simultaneously raising the GPA to keep it would probably be a fairer metric.

well it says that the populations of students haven't created the market. i presume kids who are capable are allowed other options. here in Calcasieu they have a school that does some advanced classes from kids in BFE within the parish to consolidate costs

your kids can't finish Advanced Math/Pre-Calc and then get bussed to another school for calculus?
that was offered when i was in HS
i know the school formerly known as LCB has similar options (don't know if you have to be gifted though)
