Yeah I looked into pet insurance(my work offers this as part of our benefits package).
Same thing...basically gives a 10% discount to certain vets. Our dogs go to Petsmart/Banfield and that was one of the ones it didn't cover. We already get a discount there so wasn't worth me getting.
I have a carecredit card that I originally got when my dog needed expensive dental work done. I was able to just put the expenses from the mushroom incident on there...each new charge you get like 6 months no interest to pay it off.

$2000?
In my house that dog either passes it or he's dead. People these days treat their PETS like fricking humans.

Two summers ago my rat terrier chased a cat 25 ft up a tree, everything was good until she ran out of branch & tried to turn around. She fell, luckily I was able to break the fall with my attempt at catching her, ended up with a broken leg. After surgery to pin the leg, I was out $2,000. It sucked but I love that lil dog & was blessed that it was only her leg. The vet, after hearing the story, thought for sure we'd be looking at a grim case of broken pelvis/back/neck or at the least internal damage. She's back to full speed now.

Largely due to the fact that the relationships people have with pets is almost always positive.
People spend money on what they love/need.

So everyone that cares about their pets is automatically someone that has a "lap dog"?
We get it, you hate dogs.

Wouldn't own another pet besides a dog, so you're wrong there.
Define "caring about pets".
Would that be defined as someone who will pay upwards of two thousands dollars on a dog they probably got for a quarter of that so it can continue to eat their panties and shite on their carpet?
This is just something we'll have to agree to disagree on.

$500 for new puppy sounds a lot better than $2000 for dumb dog

I guess so. Many people consider their pets as part of the family. Doesn't mean they think of them as little humans, just means they are important to the family.
Considering some people spend $$$$ on hobbies such as golf, hunting, whatever...what's spending money to care for the animal you love?
If my dog was otherwise healthy and needed emergency surgery I would pay 2 grand for that.

Why are you being an arse about what people chose to spend their emotion & money on? Just because you don't think a dog is worthy of treatment, doesn't give you the right to jump all over people who do. I'm sure there are many things you consider "worthy" that a lot of people could give a rats arse about, doesn't make you right or wrong. Working dogs have their place but that doesn't make them more worthy than a persons pet. I've owned cattle dogs, hunting dogs, & plain ol dog dogs & they all get treated the same.

Hell go to the pound and get a dog.

It's cool, no need for apology
Some people value their pets more that is all.
I mean, if you aren't going into foreclosure over paying for a dog's surgery than what does it matter what someone spends their money on?

Mine has eaten countless soft dog toys. She's always just puked them up, sometimes a week later.

Seriously, I love Jojo, she is a mutt and a very sweet animal but if she eats a sock she better be able to pass it.

Stuff like this pushes me away from the idea of getting a dog.

My dog used to always shite string and plastic before I stopped giving him toys while I wasn't home. He never had any issues but if he did I couldn't spend 2 grand on him. I bought him for 25 bucks
I don't blame people for doing it though if they have the money. It just pisses me off that vets are so expensive. I took my pup to the vet foe his original few rounds of shots and never went back after paying 300 bucks for them to run a series of tests that came back with nothing. Now I just take him to pets Mart for his shots every year and it is so much cheaper.
