People are blowing this completely out of the water. If anything they're tweaking all of these older devices to run more smoothly than they would had they done nothing. I'd rather reduced performance than my phone completely go out randomly.
I do think they should have been a little more outspoken about it, but I also don't think any of these companies are telling us everything they do.
I think the biggest example would be processors and how companies mostly sell the same one across the board but just deactivate cores for different price points.
