This has the feelings of a "statement", unless he had personal issues with the congregation itself.
If it was merely one individual he had an issue with and he wanted to survive, his course of action was poorly chosen.
Then again, I am looking at it from the perspective of rationality.
This. If you have a personal issue, you're going to go after the person that you have said issue with. You aren't going to target the entire congregation, including innocent children and the elderly.

That's a pretty damn good assumption.
My MIL is the stereotypical southern white woman in her late 50's, except that she owns a fairly productive business. She drives an Escalade. My FIL does own a year old F-250 though.

I thought Christians wouldn’t molest children or use the Bible to justify slavery, or war. As a Christian my fellow Christians are guilty of these things. I’m not going to pretend these nut jobs don’t exist in my religion.

That’s not true. Innocent people are always victims in these cases. I’m sure the school kids did nothing to the guy that burst in and shot them. You don’t know what’s in a sick individual’s mind. A perceived slight is enough to set them off.
What did those people at that country music fest do to that guy to deserve being killed. Your premise is totally flawed.

"Personal grievance" situations?
Dylan Roof - Not personal. Just shot everyone there.
Paddock - Not personal. Just shot everyone there.
Emanuel Kidega Samson - Not personal. Just shot everyone there.
This isn't always the case, but I would bet the majority of the mass shootings have no personal element to them.

Targeting an individual for personal reasons doesn't go along with this, IMO.
But, like I said, it is hard to read the irrational.

I think that you completely misinterpreted what I said. Innocent people are obviously victims. A crazy person is usually going to go after the person that he has a problem with though. He's not going to go after an entire church, including children and the elderly. That doesn't make the person that he initially targeted any less of a victim.

Mass shooting cases.
His response was in regards to this individual's motive and the references towards a "mother in law/personal target", rather than a mass casualty motive.
ETA: Apparently I have a Downvote stalker. That is so cool.
