Whoa whoa whoa. Carlin is one of the best stand ups of all time and he was considered that long before his death.

He was a revolutionary comic. I'm not going to get into the genius debate because I'm not sure what definition you give that word, but the things he talked about on stage and the way he did so were way ahead of other comics in his era.

The 7 dirty words bit is one of the best bits in the history of stand up.

"Funnier" is pretty subjective, but I'd be interested to see a list of your top 5 comics.

in no particular order

Richard Pryor
Eddie Murphy (young)
Louis CK
Bill Hicks
Zach Galifianakis

you could throw Chappelle and Rock in there somewhere as well

Yeah, that's the only thing of his that was funny.

All funny, but Galifanakis doesn't belong on that list, and I bet if you asked those guys who the top 5 comics were, Carlin would be on their lists.

It also baffles me that someone can think so highly of Hicks yet write off Carlin in the same breath.

Carlin never did it for me either. He was on the other night and evidently in that particular one he relied on the entire audience to think he was hilarious already because he didn't say anything that the average person would find funny. Kinda like listening to old Steve Martin standup where he just plays characters from his previous screen work and everyone relates to it and laughs but it's not really funny and no jokes are told.

Carlin had some good moments but was no genius.

i'm not writing him off....i said earlier that he was very funny. i just don't think he was some comedic genius that he's been propped up as since his death.

You keep saying this but it's not true. Carlin was considered one of the greatest comics of all time long long long before his death.

Saw him about a year before he died at the improv in west palm. He was cleverly funny. The night we saw him you could tell he was pretty fricked up, but not to the point that he was missing jokes or anything. It was a good show though. I liked his style.

Apparently Hedberg had a lot of people fooled with his heroin addiction (at least with how bad the addiction had gotten). I learned not too long ago he almost got his leg amputated some time before his death.

There's a Marc Maron podcasts with Hedberg's wife Lynn Shawcroft. It's a really good listen. All of Maron's podcasts are really good for anyone interested in the world of comedians.

This is true. He was considered great before I was even born. You got to watch older stuff. Not when he was old and decrepit after years of alcohol and drug abuse.

Don Rickles name never gets thrown out as a GOAT but he was way more revolutionary than any other comic in history imo.

The man could say the most insulting thing to anyone and get them to laugh. Definitely the GOAT.
