JJ Watt and it isn't even close. Keep in mind it's popular not the best, although both players are elite in their respective sports (according to many, though Harden's defense makes him a joke IMO).
Longer offseason = more time to go around town, stick your face on billboards, commercials, and participate in community outreach and do shite like throw the first pitch or just chill and hit homers with the Astros in batting practice. Watt is just everywhere right now. It's a valid comparison that's for sure but I don't think it's close.

Also, Houston is 25% black. So that % is going to lean huge towards Harden. So to say "landslide", "not remotely close" based on that percentage alone is incorrect
How can you assume the entire 25% picks Harden over Watt? I dont think thats true at all, and would be a terrible assumption. You also cant say that every white person would pick Watt over Harden. Race isnt a good dividing line here.

Not really if you listen to sports radio in Houston you wouldn't think that.

I'd venture to guess that a lot of those black people don't follow sports, but they do buy groceries at heb. In which case, they're exposed to jj watt
And echoing what another poster said, everything he does is practically on the news or radio

Seems as though everyone on here that is from Houston except OP admits this. Case closed. DWI OP.

Do you spend much time in Houston? Because you really are very wrong about this. JJ Watt is like a god to the city. The ladies of all race drool over him, the men of all race want to name their first born child after him. It really is insane the amount of coverage he has in the city.
The whole black people will pick Harden thing just isn't true.
I'm not saying Harden isn't popular, but he just doesn't do commercials or local community outreach things like Watt does.
ETA: I mean your argument is similar to saying AD is more popular in New Orleans than Brees because he has the unibrow and a large black population. That's just not true, no matter what football will be more popular, thus Brees being the most popular player in the city.

Are you the op? If so, you need to change your thread title because you're wanting something else, though I'm not sure what
I promise that jj watt's presence in Houston is much, much larger than the basketball player
ETA i see now you aren't the op, just a contrarian

The wife of a good friend of mine got JJ Watt to take a pic with a sign announcing that my buddy was going to be a dad and posted it on Twitter. In less than a day, huff po, ESPN, and the AP were reporting it. The dude is the most popular athlete in Houston by far, and top 5 nationally.

Lets say this. Exactly 50% of all males pick JJ Watt, and the other 50% picks Harden. What do you think the percentages for females will be? Just curious?

We need owlfan in here to hammer that final nail as a spokesman for his people.

I think if they polled every houston resident, once during basketball season, once during football season, and once during the off season I think the poll in Houston would come out 65/ 35 or 60/40 for Watt. I think the landslide and remotely close people underestimate the pull of the NBA to people outside their circles.

Now we're arguing semantics. Both are beloved so a 65/35 split is a landslide in context. 60/40 is close.
