Spent many a night in an altered state pondering this question.

Unfortunately, all outcomes end in our demise. Contraction ends us. Eternal expansion ends us once all the energy is used up and the universe becomes cold, dark and dead.

yeah, based on our sad, 2000 year old understanding of physics, which by the way still hasn't unified quantum mechanics with general relativity.

Its frustrating yet fascinating that our minds cannot put something like the expansion of the univers into perspective.

The universe will end for all of us, eventually. We can't live forever.

Someone posted a wiki link in reddit yesterday about entropy being the reason for time.

While reading that Asimov story I had to look up what entropy was. Still have no fricking clue what it is.

THE DARK’S PATIENCE IS INFINITE. EVENTUALLY, EVEN STARS BURN OUT.
THE DARK IS GENEROUS, AND IT IS PATIENT, AND IT ALWAYS WINS.

But there is this matter of infinite energy that might come into play.

Do expound. I still say we need to figure out jumping to another universe if possible.

Walter Bishop knows how. You just gotta watch Fringe.

Sounds like somebody has had enough entropy.

We talked about that idea in Thermo 1 a few years ago. I took it as entropy being a way to quantify time.

Entropy is the only quantity in the physical sciences (apart from certain rare interactions in particle physics; see below) that requires a particular direction for time, sometimes called an arrow of time. As one goes "forward" in time, the second law of thermodynamics says, the entropy of an isolated system will increase. Hence, from one perspective, entropy measurement is a way of distinguishing the past from the future. However in thermodynamic systems that are not closed, entropy can decrease with time: many systems, including living systems, reduce local entropy at the expense of an environmental increase, resulting in a net increase in entropy. Examples of such systems and phenomena include the formation of certain crystals, the workings of a refrigerator and living organisms.

I wish I could have taken thermo and more physics classes. CM was my major, but science and physics has always interested me.

Khan academy has great videos on these subjects.

In laymen's terms "things that are ordered will always tend toward disorder".

If you had a hot sandwich in which the molecules inside that sandwich are vibrating pretty quickly, the sandwich will tend to cool until coming to an equilibrium with the room surrounding it, meaning that this concentrated thermal energy has spread out to its surroundings, becoming more "disordered".

This is the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and it only holds for closed systems. It has broad applications mathematically in Mechanical Engineering and can be proven in a variety of ways, but I think most people can visualize it easily with everyday examples.

The universe expands and collapses over and over again. It comes out a little different every time there's a big bang, but it just keeps happening. The milky way, the sun, earth, the human race, all just happen to be the result of this iteration of the universe that we're on right now.

Energy doesn't get "used up" it's just transfers into a less usable form. Once entropy is complete and all the energy is in an inefficient form, the universe will collapse again and the brewing of another big bang will begin again.

Extraterrestrial life most certainly exists. Fossilized microscopic organisms have been found in space, and on another planet (Mars). Intelligent extraterrestrial life is another matter. If you look at Earth, of all the billions of species that have existed, only one has found it advantageous to evolve self-awareness and intelligence. It's simply not an evolutionarily advantageous trait.
