I had no idea that 7 out of every 8 Germans that died in the war died on the Eastern Front, or that the Eastern Front was, by itself, worse than all of WWI combined. It really exposed the extermination and slaughter each side dished out. When I look at it, the Germans were incredibly efficient, and insane, in their wagging of war. The amount of casualties is staggering
Most people have zero insight to the great patriotic war. Things would have been very different had Hitler attacked Moscow earlier or won at kursk. Imagine D-day had we been fighting the "real" German army. Not a bunch of kids, elderly, wounded, and captured ruskies.

Never heard of this but I just subscribed to his podcasts and will check it out. Thanks for the post.

I've got a question, the Tsar Bomba was the biggest weapon ever set off, do you think we (we being humans) currently hold a bomb bigger than the 50 megaton Tsar Bomba that the Russians dropped?
No.

His Common Sense podcasts are interesting too, especially to go back and listen as this election cycle progressed
He has interesting insights and I usually end up agreeing with most of what he says.

Blueprint came across very easy and really showed just how close the Germans, by themselves mostly, came to winning the war.
I'm listening to the Fall of the Ottomans on audible. It is incredible how absolutely, irredeemably incompetent the Ottomans were leading into World War I. The Young Turks were fricking laughable.
Then Gallipoli happened and the Jihad declared by the Caliph began to take root. There were multiple occasions when the Russians and the British nearly lost everything to the Turks (supported, of course, by the Germans). This front was the front that Carlin spent much less time on. This soft underbelly of Europe. And it's pretty fascinating how religion commingled with politics in the region. How basically all the Indian Muslims thumbed their nose at the Caliph and how after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the resultant fall of the Sultan/Caliph, there really has been no centralized religious authority in the region.

Just finished. Hol E Fuk.
The last hour or so was about the Cuban Missile Crisis.
That was one of the best podcasts I've ever heard.

I really need to go to his site and buys the ones I missed out on.
I listened to Wrath of the Kahns when it was free... wanted to listen again recently. Paid the fee to download with no regrets.

I love how Carlin speaks down to a whisper and then begins screaming again.

That was absolutely fantastic! The last hour and a half was intense

It was really interesting, how each leader in their time managed to avoid disaster, thought that was an interesting way to approach it. It also makes you question the current world leaders, how would they react, how would they posture themselves. Not a Putin fan but there's no denying the guy (at least the last 5 years or so) plays the game exceptionally well, and is quite intelligent
ETA: obviously we are beyond just the US vs USSR dynamic of the cold war, China would factor heavily in any situation that arose more than likely, but I couldn't speculate on what Beijing would do. I also couldn't speculate on what Trump would do two weeks into the job here.

While I absolutely loved Ghosts and Blueprint, I think I'll vote for Prophets of Doom as my favorite. It was a topic I had absolutely no knowledge of going into it, but it was enthralling. It was also a bit different because it focused on a few people rather than armies.
Interesting. It's the only one of his I haven't even tried. I read the synopsis, and it did absolutely nothing for me. I listened King of Kings which was sort of disappointing, but I never even touched Prophets. Maybe I'll pick it up.

Absolutely.

Halfway through this new podcast and loving it.
I have always wondered how a new world war would be fought if both combatants had nuclear weapons. How do you fight a war when, in theory, one side could wipe the entire opposition out in an instant?

"The only way to win is not to play" as the movie line goes.
What's disconcerting is that any major conflict would likely result from a WWI type situation where a spark in a less consequential place ignites (literally in this case) the whole world. I would hope that nuclear action by say, N Korea could be worked around without drawing the great powers into war directly but it is impossible to say with any certainty

Like he says early in the podcast, and nobody is completely sure who said it, but it's something along the lines of
I'm not sure how WW3 will be fought, but the next one will be with sticks and stones.
