I'm partial to the Colorado but the Canyon is definitely a looker.

That 3.6L is a sturdy, smooth motor. I also like how they use the Silverado and Sierra's axle and drive train. It makes for a pretty over built mid-sized truck and it should handle anything you throw at it.

I'm very interested in the diesel as well.

Any facts to back that up?

I honestly don't care about the ratings. I have never met one person who has owned a Tacoma and wasn't more than pleased with it and apparently I'm not alone in that boat as evidence in the resale value. I got a good price for mine, drove it for 3 years, and sold it for 2 grand less than I paid for it.

Agree 100%. Tacomas and Jeeps (wrangler) are in a class by themselves.

I study cars and trucks pretty extensively and I try not to have bias or brand loyalty when making recommendations to friends.

JD Power is a tool I use a good bit, not so much for IQ, but more for 3 years out. If it's a poor tool, I want to know about it.

Not uncommon and why I always tell people to buy a Tacoma new. Used ones are dang near as much as new.

And new Tacomas are almost as much as full size trucks (BTW I own a Taco)

If you're into that cheap, generic Asian front end, I guess I'd have to agree.

VS

Is no contest. And I'm a huge Chevy truck fan. Why Chevy didn't play off the Silverado front end for the Colorado like GMC did with the Sierra for the Canyon I'll never understand. That would have made for a good looking truck.

I think people just like them for what they are.

City people that need a truck, people that like a manual, people that that have size constraints in their garage, etc.

Plus, they do have a excellent reputation on resale and reliability.

I asked my salesman if I could get a Sierra SLT, with Bose, Nav, Trailer package, and Driver alert package near the same price as my Canyon with the same options his response...No Way.

Are you comparing Apples to Apples? And besides if you want a Mid Sized and not a full sized, why worry about the price of a full sized truck?

General rule of thumb is that you get a pretty loaded Tacoma for about what a set-up from base full-size truck costs.

Honestly, with so many variables on option packages, it is hard to calculate.

Another thing, you won't ever see Tacomas discounted much at all.
.
ETA: I know you were talking GM

I think you're spot on.

Base full-size = optioned mid-size, approximately.

The colorado looks pretty good but GM trucks are so cheaply built. My friend's Silverado seats are already coming apart.
Yeah, here's an idea...in a few years let's compare the reliability & resale of a '16 Taco vs '16 Colorado/Canyon. If you must have a GM...lease it. If you buy, go Toyota & it's not even close.

I like the models with the blacked out grill like this one:

...although I think the Sierra all-terrain is the best looking truck out there right now.

The Canyon, Colorado, F150, Sierra, and Frontier all look better than the new Tacoma IMO.

Well, I disagree. I still love my Colorado. Preferred it to the dated Tacoma.

The black grill does help the Colorado, but it still looks like a Mitsubishi from the front.

I see more Jeep Grand Cherokee in it. It does look a little more sporty and smaller than the GMC model even though I'm certain they are the same size.

As far as the Tacoma, I just can't make friends with the front end. I know they are using the new 3.5L engine from the Sienna van, but I wish they'd have gone a different direction with the front end. Everything behind the A-pillar looks exactly like the same thing they've been selling since 2003. It looks like Toyota threw together a hasty redesign in response to the new Canyon and Colorado.

Looks are subjective, but I think it looks great. It's not a rushed redesign, it's not revolutionary by any means but takes more styling cues from Tundra.
I just don't know why you would buy the Colorado when for a few grand more, you can get a decent full size Silverado.
Besides the interiors of the new GM twins are typical Craptastic GM

I own a fully loaded Tacoma that is now 10 years old and have had zero problems with it. I will very likely buy another Tacoma if this truck ever dies.

They did rush this new Tacoma out in response to the GMC and Chevrolet trucks on the market.

I've had better luck with Chevrolet and Nissan trucks than I have had with Toyota. Trucks and SUVs are GM's core competency, and it shows. They are selling every Colorado and Canyon they can build, and it's spanking the Tacoma in every evaluation and publication comparing the two.

Don't buy one if you have a dog. My friend had one and his dog fell out the back and broke its hip.
