I worked for a contractor and one of the workers on my crew would stick his phone under his hardhat and when he could be hidden he would get on his phone during work. That dude was always on his phone and never worked. They don’t want you to have cell phones for the reason of they want you to work and that’s it. They’re paying you a ton of money so you better be working

Reminds me of when product loaders were being replaced at a plant I worked at.
They demoed these bad boys and operators were laughing at how slow it moved. The manager said "Yes but this machine operates 24/7, swapping with a partner vehicle at the charging station, it will never hit anything, it doesn't get health benefits, and doesn't check its iPhone every 2 minutes."
Crickets in that conference room.

I caught a guy twice Friday on his phone inside a tower. We are both spending Memorial day with our family's. Only difference is I'm getting paid for the holiday and he's not...

Lots of places have the same prohibition.
I worked as a contractor in several locations that prohibited pictures because of proprietary info.
Any government facility that requires any level of clearance prohibits pictures.
Some places that store PII or HIPAA info prohibit pictures.

2) Not intrinsically safe is the easy "because I said so" reason to list. They almost certainly ARE intrinsically safe, but very few cellphones have the expensive testing required to prove it, so it's an easy way to keep them out of the units and make having a cellphone on you without authorization a "your arse will be shitcanned so fast if caught, you'll be in your truck two miles down the road before you realize what happened" infraction.
3) Reduction of distractions in a dangerous work environment
4) Plants don't want their business instantly on social media, ESPECIALLY for things like upsets or incidents
5) I'm paying your arse to weld, not play on your phone
6) So on
7) So forth
Yuuup

I think it’s dumb. People are going to bring their phones in no matter what. I’m not gonna be away from my phone. Emergencies happen. I don’t give a shite what your policy is.
If it was just about privacy it wouldn't be a big deal. If the phone can act as an ignition device in a classified area you're stupid to bring it in. You're going to be the dead one if shite hits the fan.

People had emergencies long before there were cell phones, and it was never a problem to notify the appropriate person. Before cell phones we would actually leave our kids with a baby sitter and go out with no way for the sitter to contact us in a emergency, guess that would be considered child abuse today.

I’ve never been in a plant that didn’t allow cell phones at all (though I do know they exist). Most just don’t allow cell phones in process areas. None I’ve been to allow taking pictures due to a) intellectual property, b) security, and c) PR reasons.
Vehicles/buggies - not allowed in classified areas without a permit (see: BP Texas City disaster)
Radios - intrinsically safe
Torches - hot work permit required
Welding machines - hot work permit required
Grinders - hot work permit required
Smart watches - being banned from more and more facilities lately
White hats on phones - Ah, now I see. Found the construction hand.

Well some of us have to make sure you go home to your kids every day. Besides, anyone who deals with flammables knows its common sense not to use phones during transfers.

I've heard they can frick with instrument communications, but I don't know that for a fact.
I have seen in a lot of first hand experience, that no matter how much they say you're not supposed to have a cell phone in the unit, they never say anything to in-house hands, just contractors. And just about everyone still has their phone on them, regardless of any policy.

That is the excuse that is used for safety and most safety personnel do genuinely care. But make no mistake safety is there to protect the liability of the company.

Neither are golf carts, but they have no problem riding them around in the units

We went to the hunting camp in the marsh 35 miles by boat when we were 13 years old. No phones and most of the time no radio (VHF) in the boat. Would go for two weeks during the holidays to the camp. Momma could not call us and we could not call her. If a true emergency came up the Sheriff was called or they would send a seaplane to get us. It had to be an emergency. We used to get along fine with pay phones, radio’s, and the messenger system. It was nice to be out of touch and we didn’t even know it.

Area Classification drawings.
Ask to see them.
Then you'll know.

Proprietary, safety, and professionalism.
When I was at Targa we (Foreman and up) had to get specialized cell phones that lessened the chance of a static spark.
And there's the whole terrorism side to it. Dont want them towel heads knowing the ins and outs of a chemical plant / refinery

Seems a few years ago 60 Minutes ran a story about animal abuse at a stockyard. Some animals were dead when they were hooked to chains.
Inside cameras for the photos. The plant fired the workers for taking photos, but judge put them back to work as whistleblowers.

Don't work in plants or places that they might restrict your precious phone time. Did you name her and take her on dates? Does she have a sexy cover? Pics or GTFO
