I understand, I wouldn’t say anything. I just can’t imagine who you are. You do understand I’m not around BR or NO though right? It’s all good either way

does not seem to have the same dangerous unpredictability as being a cop.

Once a tub fell thru a 2nd floor burnt out ceiling on me.
A bum with Hep C spit in my face on a medical call.

An O2 tank blew up and took my helmet across the house.

Naked AIDS patient spray shite all over me as I carried him down the stairs.

A drunk slammed into a car I was tending to a patient on the Pontchartrain expressway.

A camelback collapsed on me and my crew, trapping us.

A guy lit his house, called 911, then started shooting at us with an Ak-47 when we pulled up.

I could go on and on. But the word uncertainty got me thinking. I don’t think either job you can avoid the danger.
I’m not claiming to be anything special or our department being better than others, but in New Orleans it’s just a different animal. About 50K medicals and hundreds of fires a year.
Fwiw we have a great relationship with NOPD.
I have a BA, but I chose this path because I like helping people. Love my job..14 years to go!!

Salary is comparable, although police officers make on average $8K more per year.

Yea but the fireman's soft wash + lawn care + jump house inflatable rental side business evens things out.

Cops in rural towns don’t have problems. Just don’t do it in a big city.

Due to large amounts of time with absolutely nothing to do, fireman are some of the whiniest SOBs you'll ever be around.

Being a garbage man or construction worker is more dangerous than being a police officer. Fire fighters make less than cops, especially when you factor OT and other perks related to having a company car. Fire fighters should be paid more, imo.

Firefighter is probably way higher with 9/11 factored in.

There were plenty of police that died in the towers that day. You just had nearly an entire ladder company that died together. That’s why they get more attention.

In short, I think it all depends on location. In bigger cities.. Like NYC, I think I would give the edge to firefighters. While everyone is running out, they have to go in. They have to prevent the fire from spreading.

They are in fire with a bunch of gear on, I can imagine how hot it is.. There is always the risk of something blowing up. But i am curious as to how many fires they are called out to on a daily basis. And what do they really do when they are waiting around to be called out?

To answer your question in fun. Life of a fireman: Sleep until you are hungry, eat until you are sleepy. Repeat.

How do you control for the variable that risk in police work arises from the unique duty to take away the freedom (arrest) people who are prone to not go along with it and resist with deadly force? Other professions involve danger inherent in objects, materials, machinery, etc. that don’t spontaneously choose to create danger when resisting

It's empirical data analysis not some sort of controlled experiment. I guess you could include near misses in the "danger" element which won't necessarily show up in fatalities, but construction, landscaping, motor vehicle operation jobs, and agriculture all have more fatalities than police officers.

And they're not top 10 when it comes to fatality rate with population weighed in:
