Baton Rouge’s demographics don’t work for people like you anymore. This isn’t the 1980s anymore.

I've realized this and but I can't say that is why I moved out. Other reasons caused that decision but I will most likely never live in Baton Rouge again. All my immediate family still lives there or Prairieville so I'll always have to associate with Baton Rouge for that reason alone. Plus, an LSU ballgame or two every year is worth a reason to stay for weekend, just have to make sure it’s all on the right end of town to be safe.

What happened to Baton Rouge?

Honest question. Most medium sized cities with large state universities are okay. Not always great but okay.

EBR Parish school system
People either moved to Ascension or Livingston or put their kids in private schools

My mom grew up in NBR, my Grandma shopped at Hi Nabor on Winbourne until the early 90’s

ETA
As Headslash said, Katrina was a big factor as well

It started bubbling in 2001 with Zachary (and separate but subsequently Central) leaving EBRPSS.

Prarieville got hot. Still sort of is.

Katrina was the big BOOM. Never recovered.

Gustav of 08 and Flood of 16

Was once a great southern city.

Nah. It was a decent enough place with some potential that could never quite be realized and now certainly never will.

After Katrina there was a nice little boom downtown. Hilton hotel was renovated. You had Roux House, Schlitz & Giggles, Boudreaux and Thibodeaux’s and some other places right around 2006 shortly after Katrina. Downtown and 3rd street was the place to be from around 2006-2013. Then all momentum pretty much vanished overnight and nowadays is a shell of its former self.

The reality is the public education system in EBR (and La) is bad. The best combat to this is a strong blue-collar and grey collar job market. Then the white collar market, while smaller, is subsidized by LSU/State Gov. Since a lot of these blue collar industries could exist elsewhere in the region (read: Texas) the incentives need to remain strong.

The JBE/SWB 1-2 punch of anti-job creation killed any momentum from the previous Jindal-Kip era in EBR.

I don't like Broome that much but why blame get. Louisiana is backwards and it's faults are centuries in the making . From ediwin Edward era ... Need more business to come here

I’m just talking about the post-Katrina era in EBR. If we want to take a stroll down the last century-plus of Louisiana politics, there’s enough issues and failures to keep this thread going for days.

I will give props to the OP. He took a lot of heat earlier today for not having links but his information turned out to be correct, unfortunately. God bless those officers and their families.

It really was a pretty cool and upcoming place around that time. I worked downtown during the day and a night job at D’Agostinas Steakhouse next to Roux House and was a decently happening spot. I’d get off work and go next door sometimes or to Happys across the street to see the nice looking ladies and have a cold beer.

Is that Happys even still open? I know the other closed and the Roux House is gone.
