30 and 30 in Africa would be great. I'm not moving to ND. Work up there? Sure. 30 and 30 up there? Yes.

I am taking it that you dont have a family or old lady? If that is the case that is a diffident positive for you. You can do 30 and 30 in ND, would do that before I went to Africa, forget that hell hole.

No, I have family. I average about 250 days away from home now. 6 months away would be a little less than I'm doing now. Not to mention when I'm home I have to spend so much time at the office.

I don't think you're going to get the position you think you might starting out.
Those 30/30 jobs go to people who can already produce revenue and likely have 5-10 years experience. International jobs almost exclusively use the best in the industry.
You will not start out as a revenue stream. In fact, many companies want you on a 3 month training period before you're even allowed to do the job.
Expect to work a job for at least 3 months with no time off and making around $70k a year when you start.

Even North Dakota has slowed down.

Well I wish I could be more help but thats about all I have. As it has been said keep an eye out on rigzone for jobs in those areas and start hitting the phones and and sending our resumes. As for Africa, I have heard horror stories and some that are not that bad. I have thought about going once or twice, the $ is good. If you do go MAKE frickING SURE TO TAKE THE MALARIA MEDS, my uncle was in the hospital for a month and has permanent nerve damage from it, damn near died. Good luck bud, wish I could help more.

I knew ND was starting to slow down but didnt know the over seas jobs were the harder ones to get into though. Who are you working for now RedStick?
Posted on 2/1/13 at 9:18 pm to redstick13
That's fine. I realize that I have it's an initial step back. I can handle that and it's something we have discussed. I just don't even know where to go to start looking.
Thank you. (I'd give you the cheers thingy but on the moblie site and no thingys)

I work for SDI now. I've recently contemplated going back to work for BHI or going overseas for SLB.
I'll give this work in Cali a few more months and see what I think. I wouldn't mind going back to running RSS tho.

Any of those countries want to force companies to use locals. Companies usually have to bring in very experienced or specialized people or risk not being able to get a visa for them. Even African countries.
Unless you have at least 5 years experience there's little hope of getting on overseas. Including Africa.

SDI is the company I actually want to go work for. Have heard it is better to start out with one of the big dogs first though bc of the better training?

I agree with this 100%. The big 3 provide great training programs.

I have heard that now that I think about it. Would really love to be able to go to Australia but heard its one of the hardest places to get on at. Wouldn't mind working in SA but thats another tough one.

Does SDI send a lot of guys offshore or are yal mostly land?
Posted on 2/1/13 at 9:34 pm to GREENHEAD22
I think we are mostly land. We have a really good E-field and gyro tool which are most suitable for land work. They are working on a RSS tool, which I've run, that looks pretty promising.
Their technology is miles behind what BHI,HAL,SLB have tho.

great thread. Tons of good info. I'm in virtually the same boat as the OP. Good luck.
