I think the sinkhole theory makes the most sense while we are all sitting around speculating

I was a part of a 30 story high rise in west palm. The amount of conduit that was allowed in each slab was insane. I wish I still had a picture of it

yeah... of the wild speculative theories... those that seem the most plausible at this moment are...

A) sinkhole
B) frick-up related to ongoing building maintenance/certification

ETA: and not necessarily in that order

I've been told by an expert that sinkhole is probably unlikely, due to the location being near the shoreline. It's starting to look more like structural deficiency of some kind. This is all still speculation.

do sinkholes ever occur on sand? I always thought the issue was around limestone

Miami is full of sketchy looking condominiums that are starting to get up there in age. Hopefully this will lead to some self reflection that could prevent another collapse.

Interesting. I wonder if they will order an evacuation of any of the other condos in the area that were built in the same way around that time.

Imagine the conspiracy theories people are going to conjure up for this.

Those beach front condos are designed to be able to withstand total substrate washout and still stand.

Not knowing anything, I'm going with the renovation going on as the cause, or at least what started the collapse.
It was said that only roof work was being done. If so, has there been lots of rain that may have led water collecting in certain areas that could have led to excessive corrosion and additional weight?

sinkholes can also happen over time if you have a pipe leak in the ground.

Looks like a sinkhole happened. You can see where the ground level used to be in the first pic with the cars.

The building had a basement. The debris most likely collapsed into it.

That's why you use pilings. That shouldn't be it after 40 years. The middle of the building collapsed first, then the one end. Something was compromised in the middle.

Were they structural renovations or just architectural... big difference.

No idea. But I am willing to bet there is a lot of CYA going on right now.

Former Surfside Vice Mayor Barry Cohen, however, said he believed the roof work and other factors, like a new high rise being constructed next door, may have compromised the integrity of the building.

Not a geo-tech P.E. but if wellpoints were being used to drop the watertable to install underground parking or concrete foundations next door, it is plausible, if not probable, the movement of water caused settlement problems. I have see the results of pulling water from under adjacent buildings, it usually ends with someone writing a check.
