The city bought cranes and wrote them in as a normal city expenditure. They are using a random city worker to run them. That worker has no experience rigging, because he hasn't helped the clueless guys doing the rigging at all. NOFD guys took down Davis and Liberty, and I think NOPD guys took down Beauregard. No telling who will take down Lee.
There was no plan, no oversight, and no one on site with any experience in rigging
Eta: I have worked on tree crews with better crane operators and riggers

What I seriously don't understand are the big supporters. If Mitch was someone who had worked his entire life to help heal racial divide and had an impressive civil rights resume that is one thing. He has nothing. This is all for his own benefit. Yeah, it is possible that it will backfire for him in the long run but he's obviously willing to take that chance. I just don't see how you can support someone who is doing it for all the wrong reasons. He's so dirty and slimy.
Somebody earlier said it best. To almost every single person in this city, they were just works of art. Someone to look at and maybe discuss. No one was revering anything.
So he we get Toussaint or some other musician. I like musicians. They are great. But really what does a statue of a musician teach?
I hope he shows up to a saints game this year. Must see tv.

Boycott all of New Orleans! Well, Parkway is about as good an exception as any. Other than that, screw New Orleans!!!!! Where are the community leaders and big businessmen? I know they're afraid of being blackballed but come on. If boycotting holds up they lose anyway. Yeah, the "Pro" take downers can make up the difference short term but long term...... they're screwed!

Travers just said a city official told him the NOPD is looking at shutting down all vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic from Julia St. to Annunciation St to Erato St to Baronne St. starting at 5 PM.
So they wanna shut this down during downtown after work traffic. There's also hundreds of businesses, residences, along thousands of people in this area. There's gonna be a riot

Won't do any good. There's not a judge in Orleans Parish with the stones to rule against this, at this point. The threats from the Anti-Monument folks are more real, as are the threats from the mayor, police chief and whoever else.
That's what made it so funny in that other thread, a few days ago, about that lawyer saying Kern Reese is a judge who makes decisions in a "conservative manner." LMAO Yeah, fella, right. He worked on the mayors' campaigns and you think he's going to go against the mayor, EVEN IF the paperwork...uh...briefs were accurate? Please.
Mitch has some mighty stroke, he's kept the City Park I.A. quiet and they HAVE legal standing, he's kept the Friends of City Park quiet and they are losing members, including former executives and board members. Nary a peep. There's something much more dangerous at play here, one day it will all come out.

I can guarantee that there has not being a soil test to make sure the ground can handle the load being applied by the outriggers. You aren't going to pick that statue at that height with a carry deck. Not too mention to boom angle the crane will be operating at to get around all of the street car wires. I wonder if they are going to shut down the grid in order to not light the crane up like a Christmas tree.

He's brought attention to the city over this now racial issue, rather than bring attention to the city to help resolve the worst crime rate in the country.
New Orleans is the 32 most dangerous city IN THE WORLD. Juarez, Mexico is more safe than New Orleans.

Since Lee Circle is near the Smoothie King Center, I guess that this is the "replacement monument."

How can they shut it down w/o notice?
If Mitch has a dog, I will kick it.

So let me get this straight. You think the focus of those four states changed after they saw slavery conditions down south. Even though:
I was speaking more generally to the Union as a whole, but I'll answer your questions.
quote:
1)The Emancipation Proclamation literally did nothing for anyone. It freed no slaves in any part of the Union.
Your first sentence is nonsense, the second is closer to the mark but misguided. As to the first, the EP brought about enticement it was an invitation for thousands of slaves to secure freedom by escaping to the Union lines. This is often called "self-emancipation" and it was to a certain extent, but it wouldn't have been an option without the EP. You can read A Slave No More: Two Men Who Escaped to Freedom, Including Their Own Narratives of Emancipationfor two such amazing stories. Secondly, people often don't realize this part of the EP: "And I further declare and make known that such persons of suitable condition will be received into the armed service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service." These two new policies - a call for black enlistment and enticement- turns Union soldiers into an army of liberation in the seceded states. (Read Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861-1865) As to the second part, the EP was seen as a war measure, as was the First and Second Confiscation Acts (of which most people aren't aware) Lincoln believed he didn't have legal justification to free the slaves in the border states.
quote:
2)Those soldiers came from slave holding states, and many had their own slaves.
Not really, if you look into the regiments from those states that fought for the Union you'll see that most came from portions of the state that slavery didn't exist or was minimal in nature. Many people from MO, KY, fought for the Confederacy. Parts of the state where you had large plantations, those men enlisted and fought for the Confederacy. The state conventions or legislatures may have voted to stay in the Union but many people (especially the ones who owned slaves) did not agree with it.
quote:
3)Those States didn't free their slaves until the 13th amendment. After the end of the civil war.
And? It's not as if people in the North were all anti-slavery. Read Copperheads: The Rise and Fall of Lincoln's Opponents in the North for a deep exploration into that. Many Northerners benefited from slavery, mainly banks, insurance companies and textile mills.

there is a very large section within the OSHA guidelines which entails what must be done in order to perform an aerial lift, and from watching the Beauregard statue come down, not one person was competent in order to complete the task at hand. Also I am sure that the crane operator was not qualified on the piece of equipment that he is running much less licensed by the NCCCO, but you can browse the OSHA website and find out all the information which is being disregarded while performing this.
You think B&G (oops) let their crane be operated by an amateur?
