Have an '09 9-3 with 100k miles on it. No issues whatsoever and I love it. It really depends on the year and the individual car as they can be hit or miss from what I understand.

If you can find one with a clean Carfax and has a thorough service record, chances are it's very reliable and will last you forever. I believe the big issues with Saabs is their electronics system, which can certainly be scary to a potential buyer.

I only take it to a Saab/European specialist to get my 40k, 60k, 120k, etc service and bring it to a "normal" mechanic I trust to get oil changes, new brakes and the like, so maintenance isn't any more expensive than any other car. The common belief out there on Saab message boards says you only really need to bring it in every 10k miles for an oil change. I usually bring it in after 7500 just because.

Finding parts for it hasn't been an issue for me. saabusaparts.com has everything you could need. Had my car broken into and needed to replace a window regulator. Took me all of five minutes to find it on that website.

Bottom line is they are great cars if you find one with a good history.

The ones with the ignition start in the console area are terrible because the keys get broken off all the time.

This is worth mentioning - never have less than two sets of keys at any given time. If you lose your keys you are fricked because they have to replace the entire ignition system, not just the key.

Start with two, and if you lose one, replace it immediately. I would absolutely insist the person selling you their car either give you two sets of keys, or reduce the price to buy and additional one. Costs somewhere in the neighborhood of $150 because they have to program it to the existing ignition system.

Saabs. They're quirky.
