If someone wants to quit and has significant struggles, that's gotta be indicative of a bigger problem, right?

That's not me, I don't want to quit and I go weeks without drinking, but I just can't imagine not being able to.

Ultimate point being, if it's that significant of an ordeal, real help beyond the OT may be in order. The only exceptions I could see would be perhaps the younger crowd where everything involves drinking and you may not have a career/serious relationship/kids, etc. to keep you from it.

jesus man...you've gotten tot he point where it's only a couple of times a month? Just leave it alone.

I hear you on the making you someone you're not thing. Once I had kids I significantly cut my intake because I couldn't stand any sort of hangover or energy drain with the little bastards around. Just having it in my head was enough to throttle me. Just say no. I bet everytime you consider a drink now days you feel guilty before you even drink it right? lay off.

Well, then one good way to stop drinking is try to get shredded. Try to get some 6-pack abs going. That is going to require a strict diet, and that usually excludes alcohol.

I can understand not wanting to, though. It is hard, but it will definitely make you think less about drinking.

I began the change about a year ago. Cut back from 4-5 nights a week to the weekends. Then I cut back to only every other weekend.

Trying to give it up 100% is brave. If I were you, I'd see if I could keep it to every other weekend for a while longer before kicking it out. You've taken what could be called a problem by some, and managed it. If you are able to keep it to every other weekend, then you've changed from a near-alcoholic to a social drinker, and everyone loves a social drinker. The trick, I've found, to every other weekend is learning to avoid the temptation to get shite-face-drunk. Honestly, it's so nice being plastered; that numb feeling, but that's when bad shite happens. Learn to enjoy a light buzz again and the social grease it provides, and you've controlled the drink rather than the drink controlling you.

Cold turkey, IMO, always precipitates a binge episode later that could reignight actual alcoholism. Infrequent social consumption means you've got it tied up and under control, which is the ultimate goal I think you're seeking.

This is a pretty good reason not to just leave it alone...

You don't have to drink everyday to have a drinking problem. If it effects your life negatively, it is a problem.

Bandaids. All you have to do is not take them.

I'll go completely sober for a couple of weeks at a time, but then I just get bored of being a complete recluse. Being single...everything everyone does involves drinks (happy hours, dinners, etc). Luckily I've learned how to manage it, but I find it impossible to cut it out all together and still be somewhat social trying to meet or hang out with people.

I quit for ten years, drank again for a year, and quit again, ten years ago. It is no big deal anymore. It quit being fun when I hit 40 years old.

They are band-aids!! But it's just a tool, to help you along your way too sobriety!! If this guy wants to get sober lets help him!!
He needs to change his lifestyle, some friends, etc. It might suck but if he's asking this bunch of drunks he's in bad shape!!

Your heart is in the right place. But first things first, your boy has to decide if he really wants to quit.

I developed an acid reflux condition which makes it too painful to drink. You should try it.
