Because it likely happened in a quarantine that barely has running water and was more of improper hand sanitation than a failure to wash them. I probably could have worded that better. It's really unfathomable how poor conditions over there really are. They barely have the capability to give IV Fluids in an inpatient setting, which beds are wildly limited. And most of these patients are being cared for in tents.

The Dallas Ebola patient has died

It spreads similar to the common stomach virus, does it not?
The stomach virus seems to be widely spread throughout the country.
It can spread quite easily in a crowded city IMO. For example: Guy feels sick, thinks it's just flu or something ordinary, coughs into hand, touches door knob. Person behind them touches door knob and then scratches nose or touches mouth or rubs eyes. He now has ebola.

From a guy who studied Ebola in 89. This would make sense, specially if there's high humidity.
quote:
Dr. C.J. Peters, who battled a 1989 outbreak of the virus among research monkeys housed in Virginia and who later led the CDC's most far-reaching study of Ebola's transmissibility in humans, said he would not rule out the possibility that it spreads through the air in tight quarters.

Oh. I assumed it was the one who was treated in Atlanta/educated in the US that he was speaking of. I cannot speak to European sanitation standards/expectations, particularly if it was rural vs tertiary center. But simply speaking, mistakes happen. I know a doctor who was delivering a child to an HIV+ mother. He took his mask off before he took his gown and gloves off. When he ripped his gown off, part of it brushed against his face and was wet. This is one of the most brilliant guys I know, too. Fortunately, there's not even a documented case of a similar instance transmitting HIV. but point is: Mistakes happen. I don't know the whole story with the ebola patient.

You sure?
The outbreak started in December 2013 in West Africa. Since then 7,493 cases have been reported. In the grand scheme of things, that is not a terribly large amount. This includes very poor and crowded cities like Monrovia, Freetown, Lagos, Conakry.

can you still catch Ebola from a dead person?
Posted on 10/8/14 at 11:20 am to tgrbaitn08
yes, very much so. That's how a lot of it has spread in Africa. Apparently they like to touch and kiss their dead or something.

Read The Hot Zone. A dead body is like a mound of ebola.

Is this what happens when you wash your hands after you pee? Should I start doing that?

Autopsies on patients who die of Ebola should be avoided. If an autopsy is necessary, the state health department and CDC should be consulted regarding additional precautions.
