Agreed on Harry Potter rides, Transformers ride in Universal was also one of my favorites. It took us a whole day to do Universal without express pass, I'd say two days to do both parks. Enjoyed them more than Disney World, they actually have places you can sit down and take a break besides just concrete.

Orlando Informer is really good site to visit to help you plan your vacation to Universal. The most helpful tool from this site is the crowd calendar. It very accurately predicts the crowd sizes for the day. I went back in April and had a 4 Day ticket, but the crowds were so small at that time, we did just about everything we wanted to do in 3 days. I can pretty much guarantee if you go in July or August, it's going to be packed. One day might not be enough to do what you want. Two days might be your best bet.

Best Rides (in my opinion and in no particular order)

Universal
-Revenge of the Mummy
-Hollywood Rip Rockit Roller Coaster
-Transformers: The Ride
-Escape From Gringotts
-The Simpsons Ride

Islands of Adventure
-The Incredible Hulk (this is the best ride there)
-The Amazing Spider-Man
-The Forbidden Journey
-Dueling Dragons
-Jurassic Park River Adventure (you'll get wet)
-Ride Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges (you'll get soaked)

The one ride you can skip is Doctor Doom's Fearfall. It is just bad.

Insider tip: Get a Birthday Button from guest services, even if it is not your birthday, but keep that to yourself. When the staff realizes it is your birthday, they may let you skip the line and use the express pass line. It doesn't work all the time, but it is worth a shot.

You can see Universal in a day. Islands requires a full day minimum even if you're going when there's only a light crowd at the park. Plan on 1 day at Universal and a day and a half at Islands (assuming you and/or your kids like thrill rides)
