I mean, come on...Charleston the best city to travel to? Best overall city? Not even close.
Charleston has a TON of issues working against it.
Charleston has a lot in common with New Orleans. It used to be a huge, significant American city. It’s still a big port, but it’s mostly tourism based today.

To each his own...
I could not fathom having to drive an hour to the grocery store or several hours from top medical care. There is a trade off for everything.
True.
However my situation is 10 minutes to groceries, 15 to Fred Meyer (a better Target) or Costco, 15 minutes to the ski area, 10 to world class fishing and hunting right outside the door, not to mention hundreds of miles of hiking trails within a 20 minute drive.
It is possible to find a little of both worlds, and avoid crowds, while living in the outdoors.
However if I had to boat or drive an hour to stock on groceries I wouldn't think it would be a big deal, I would just plan accordingly.

Sister lives in Vancouver, WA. It is hot because of Portland housing prices and it serves as a bedroom communuty, but there is "no there there." I live outside of Seattle. The crazy increases in housing prices are slowing down, but I would take this area over Portland/Vancouver any day. I moved here from BR a little over 3 years ago...ranks as one of the best decisions I ever made.
The Couv is an awful place. People like to live there because of the tax advantages of no income tax in Washington and no sales tax in Oregon, but you are stuck in the ultimate suburban nothingness and crippling traffic over the Columbia bridges.

Louisiana map from 2017 showing lossses and gains for 2016 population. Looking for a current one because EBR parish has lost 2K in 2017 and 2018 and the state lost overall 10K.
But blue = loss, red= equal or gain

Most of those numbers are for the entire metro areas. So that leaves lots of room for sprawl (ex: PHX metro). Can easily live in the suburbs of those areas.
to me, living in a suburb does not equal "in the middle of nowhere".
in a suburb, most necessities should still be within a 5-10 min drive.

I think I would have to reevaluate my life if my QoL depended on being 5 minutes from mass produced consumer goods though.
