Black OTer,
Historically, they were great and necessary resource. Now many are underperforming, and lack the necessary resources. Outside of the top schools, I would say let them crumble.
I have many friends who went to HBCU and they do produce bright dtudents especially at the top. It's going to be hard to save them in the future tho.

Ok bro, I'm not gonna argue with you about it.
So many times on this board and in this country in general people misconstrue the truth for racism.
It's almost like a witchhunt.
You are wrong

GFY hater.
So b/c your wife is a lawyer you know what you are talking about. Just b/c Southern law sucks you will group all HBCU's together?
Do you know how absurd you sound?

That makes sense. I'm guessing Southern still has the only nursing program in Baton Rouge outside of OLOL?
If that's the case and I were a decision maker at southern, I would go nuts with the marketing (maybe they are, I haven't lived in BR since 06).

Most of them are diploma mills.

My wife and I both graduated from HBCUs, and I think we are doing well. I'm still friends with guys I met freshmen year and they are doing well. So many kids end up at HBCUs, who probably should not be in college. HBCUs are filled with talent

No one even mentioned Southern Law, but you had to use it as the worst possible case example for your racist fricking argument. You're ignorant of the world at large, and too stupid to even see what you are doing.

Isn't Southeastern's nursing school on Essen Lane?

Thats the major issue.
One of my friends went to Norfolk State. Dude is a bum.

On one hand, I don't really care. People have family histories that draw them to HBCUs, and it doesn't bother me that they exist or that people want to attend them.
On the other, they're generally pretty bad. The "Ivy" HBCUs are generally akin to mediocre large public Us. So in some sense they're probably a waste of money to operate and result in bad loan debt for students.
The only other issue I have is that some entities (diversity-obsessed grad schools, the US government) don't weigh the value of a good school vs. HBCU, and that is unfair, IMO. No matter how good Hampton is compared to FAMU, it's not on the same level as Vanderbilt, even UGA. I'd just like more honesty and transparency on that front. It makes no sense that my law school did special tours and a hard sell for a bus load of FAMU kids, but a bus load of kids from Mercer wouldn't get the same treatment.

It could be. My wife was looking into nursing programs but this was in 2003. IIRC, she narrowed her choice down to the lake and SU. I don't remember her mentioning SELU but maybe that campus wasn't there at the time.
That's probably why she didn't mention it. Our first was a toddler at the time and she wouldn't have wanted that commute.

HBCU's are where black people go to become racist. Graduate. Then become members of the NAACP, national black caucus, diamond watch wearing preachers, or any other profession that gives them attention and profit from racism.

Xavier has historically been a very good school nationally and internationally. They are consistently recognized as one of the best pharmacy schools in the world, very surprising for many. Students of all faiths, races, and nationalities compete to get in.
That having been said a majority of the public HBCU underperform, and do not meet the basic standards states and the federal governments set for other universities. It is no coincidence the best HBCUs are the private ones, because they can selectively choose who they accept.
Lowering standards to help those that have lower standards, or trying to give them equal "opportunity" whatever that means, is really a horrible tactic and hurts students more so than helps. There are some very good students at SUNO, Southern, and Grambling. Students that chose the history and pride over potentially a better school that was not labeled a HBCU. Had a class where we worked with students from all of the New Orleans universities (there are 6 undergrad schools) the girls from Dillard, Xavier, and SUNO, all had 4.0's there entire college academic career. All graduated high school with 27's or above on their ACT. While it may not paint the whole picture of the school, Dillard does have the highest retention and graduation rate in the state of Louisiana, believe it or not.
SUNO and UNO should have been merged 20 years ago, and then to not merge after Katrina, that was a joke. Merge Grambling and Tech. While many white and black from both schools and alumni will be against it as they have in the past, it only benefits everyone. More funding equals better professors, better facilities, and more importantly a student body that is diverse and more self sufficient.
Tulane has a higher endowment than all of the other 4 year undergrad schools in New Orleans combined. For Dillard with an endowment of only $45 million to do what they do is actually quite remarkable.

Another intelligent, well-reasoned, well-informed post.
