I prefer Christmas Eve. Always seems to be a better time...Christmas Day is more hectic.

Well, it's more that the pagan holidays that were subsumed into the Christian mythos were already there...but...

The church has it's most important masses on the evening before the day of celebration (that day starts when the sun goes down the day before). So the Easter vigil and Christmas vigil are both big deals. Guessing it relates to that.
