I agree with you. We should have automatic weapons, as well, but opportunists largely took that right away in the 1930s, 1960s and 1980s.
We'll just have to make do with semiautomatics until we can acquire better weaponry from the battlefield.
The argument that we can't resist with semis is weak sauce, baw, and you know it. 20 or 30 million folks with rifles has a solid chance. Asking them to do it with revolvers, single shot shotguns and spears is just tough sledding.

If someone entered a school with a Saiga 12 with a 30 round mag on it, they would do far more damage than any AR15.

i dont know about him but im just talking about a hypothetical.
a grown man could go into an elementary school with some basic weapons and inflict some serious damage. a knife would be pretty devastating in an elementary school. running around not blasting off rounds alerting people could be bad for body count

I think society would take its chances against a shooter with pistols over a shooter with AR-15. I understand the VA-Tech shooter "suceeded" but thats not reason enough for me to say, "OK well then I guess we shouldnt ban semi-automatic weapons. Because, you know, someone could do the same damage with a pistol".

Any firearm has 3 basic purposes.
Kill, injure, or intimidate.
From the smallest caliber pistol, to sniper rifles, to 50 caliber machine gun, they all do the exact same thing.
