I have my entire back covered, my right arm is sleeved, my upper left chest is partially covered, and my left arm is partially sleeved.
You would never know this if you only know me through work.

Cognitive dissonance: if you want to express your special meanings or honor for someone, why choose a medium that must be covered up? Or do you propose/promote/desire a world in which everyone walks around naked (I think that's called nudism?)?
A perfect example of how it's impossible to please everybody and the silliness of trying to do so.
If people get tattoos that are always visible then they are trashy and if they get them where they can be covered in some settings then they aren't being true to the nature of self expression. This sort of self contradicting position (not you but the entire opposition taken as a whole) seems to be people searching for any reason to find fault with something. It's confirmation bias rationalization (if I'm expressing that idea correctly).
It seems to me like people look for reason to judge something that should be in reality inconsequential to them so that they have a reason to declare superiority. It doesn't seem all that different than catty, gossipy type of behavior. Personally I try not to spend that much time judging people on what I perceive to be their personal preferences, which is pretty much how I view tattoos.

Holy crap there is a lot of stupidity in this thread. I have 10 tattoos, including a full sleeve, and I have a great job, a college education, and a fantastic marriage. All of my tattoos are original to me.
I will agree that the majority of people get them for some dumb reason, or just pick one out of the book, or get an artist who doesn't know what they are doing. To me tattoos should actually mean something(all of mine do) and be done properly. Besides that, screw anyone else who tries to judge you about them.
The argument that they will look bad in 50 years?? Most of the people making that comment are probably fatties, who are scared to take their shirts off at the beach. I would rather look at a little bit of faded ink, than some 300lb fattie with a rug on his back.

While correlation != causation, you don't see very many wealthy businessmen with tons of tattoos. Take a stroll through a corporate headquarter and you will see tattoos on the cleaning staff, the customer service representatives, and even some low level managers. Make your way to the windowed offices and tattoos will be hard to find.

They are visible to me and the people that I care about. I could care less if someone I don't know sees them.

This place has an unusual disdain for people who have tattoos (Especially when it's females). You'll generally get the same old argument on here. "Your tattoo is going to look awful when you are 60.", "You won't be able to get a traditional 9 to 5", "How trashy of you" etc.
Its not an unusual disdain.
Tattooed people are not by rule bad people.
Tattooed people are not by rule dumb or ugly etc.
Tattoos are NOT taboo.
To me personally, they do not make sense. If you want to convey meanings/messages then speak.
If you want to remember a big event in your life...then why do you need to paint it on your body? Are you planning on getting alzheimer's early on?
With all the things in life that you need to do, the things you need to care about, I dont entirely understand why tattoos are the things people reach out to do.
I also think about the origins of tattoos. They had deep religious/familial meanings within native bands/groups/tribes/civilizations etc.
Now they've become "oh DUDE BROO, that's a SICK tattoo dude bro! yeah bro! I want a skull next"
No, not everyone who gets a tattoo talks like that. If you're doing it just to "conquer" the fear of being someone who has a tattoo...then wtf? Aren't there better/more important fears to conquer besides that? Sorry, but Im not buying that one.
Lastly, NO, they do not effect me, NO, I do not think negatively of tattooed people, NO I do not judge them.
Its a simple commentary based on observations. Tattoos are not a big deal at all when it comes down to it...which is why its odd that they're so prevalent...and also why its odd that anyone cares that they're prevalent/trendy.

I think they are on their way out. I believe there is an upward trend in removing tattoos right now.

Many friends have them. Some good. Some shitty and in poor taste. I think they're about the same as any other hobbies or styles that friends may like.
Pretty accurate analysis if you ask me. Who really gives a shite? It's just ink on skin - it's not like it affects anybody else. It's not like the tattooed population is asking for -gasp- preferential treatment because they are different. I mean, that would be ridiculous, wouldn't it?
It's just a reflection of your tastes and personality, like the type of car you drive, the haircut you have, the team you root for, the books you read, whatever. People have convictions and loyalties that they express through this medium. Other people do it because they lack individuality and think it's cool.
It's up to you to decide which is which and who is who...

I've been wanting to start this thread for a while. You can't go anywhere without seeing people covered in tats. It especially bugs me when I see an attractive girl covered in them. I always want to ask them why they want to ruin their nice skin.
AUTO-BALLED
This is how we knew George Michael was gay. Funny how none of the girls could figure it out.

They look like trash and anyone who has attempted to explain the "deep significance" of theirs sounds fricking retarded. In college, we auto-balled anyone with a tattoo. ... I'm absolutely an unapologetic conformist.... It's weird to me that a grown man would reference the things he did as a college student as if his frat boy zeal holds some kind of merit. Like you were so fricking cool as a 20 year old brat, that making up terms like "auto balled" and thinking people with tattoos care about your opinion. Unapologetic conformist makes it sound like you are incapable of thinking for yourself. Do you wear a suit everyday because you want to or because if you don't you're so expendable that you will get fired for the kind of pants you wear to work? Sounds like you depend on someone else to write your pay checks. I'm willing to bet you wouldn't dare walk up to someone in your cheap suit from forever 21 and voice your displeasure over their life choices.

That's incorrect. Right ear was queer. The saying was "right is wrong". Left ear just meant you were edgy and cool.

It's been so long I honestly couldn't remember. I do remember discussing it on the school bus with my friends though.

Many different cultures have practiced the art of tattoos for centuries, even millenniums. Vikings use to cover their body in it.
