Sophomore year in college. I was sleeping in since I didn't have a class until afternoon. I was living at home at the time, and my mother came in and woke me up saying something about a plane crash. I went downstairs and watched ABC's coverage. We'd been watching about 5 minutes when the 2nd plane hit. My mother shouted "No!" I whispered "God!" We both stood there in shock. I also remember driving later that day and the eerie sight of a beautiful blue sky with no airplane contrails.

I was at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, WA doing SERE training. 9/11 was the final day of Resistance training. For those unfamiliar, Resistance training is where they put you in a mock POW camp. Of course, it isn't the Hanoi Hilton by any stretch, it is still a very rough time especially being right on the heels of the survival phase.
We weren't told about the events of the day until about 8:00 that night when we got in from "the field." When they started doing almost a play-by-play of the events, we thought they were creating another scenario to put us back in the POW camps. I didn't believe it until they had a Chaplain start offering a prayer for the victims, their families, our military for what we knew was ahead, and our national leadership to be able to lead the nation through.

Walking out of the Gare du Nord in Paris. I had been visiting my sister on an Army base in Baumholder and had taken a trip to Paris by train. She had loaned me her phone because mine didn't work over there. It rang as I was walking out of the station and she told me to enjoy my trip because I would not be able to get back on the base until further notice b/c the Pentagon had been attacked. There was a rumor going round about the Eiffel tower also being targeted and I got to watch Paris become militarized as I was driving though with my cousin who had met me at the station.

I was riding (horses) that morning. I didn't know about the twin towers attack until after 2:00 that afternoon. I was having an idyllic day, no knowledge of the attacks whatsoever. My prehistoric cell phone had no signal at my farm in those days. My husband tried to call repeatedly on the barn phone but I missed the calls. He was a basket case. He worked on Wall Street for several years and knew people who had loved ones lost in that attack...

On my way to gross dissection anatomy lab in grad school stopped at the student cafe watching the aftermath of the first plane having crashed and seeing the second plane crash live.
Our professor was an orthopedic surgeon from Iraq and he asked class not to blame the Arabs and he led the class in a Christian prayer and dismissed lab so we could all reflect.

I was in Señor Barfield's freshman Spanish class at the time. So we were both in the same grad class. I am sure you remember but man, when Bro. Ray came on the TVs we all just knew something big was up, he looked so somber and they never would interrupt class for something minor over the TV. What a crazy damn day.

At home, working with The Today Show on. They had a report on that a plane had flown into one of the trade towers and were speculating that a private plane had gone off course and hit the building. As my husband has his private pilot's licence, i called him at work thinking he might be interested in this...

FT Leonardwood, Mizzu taking my final for my Officer Basic Course. Lead instructor walked in and told us to stop and said there has been an incident. Captain's Career course down the hall had it pulled up live on the big screen and we could hear their collective disbelief so we took off to their classroom and stormed in to see the second attack and Leonardwood went on lockdown, it houses schools for MP's, Engineers, and Chemical MOS. was considered a target due to the amount of soldiers it housed

I was on the way to a pretty good sized meeting in Orlando. I heard Howard Stern say that a small plane had hit one of the towers. There was speculation that it was just an accident from a plane like a Piper Cub or something small.
About the time I was pulling into the parking lot the second plane hit. Stern immediately knew it was terrorism and we were at war. I went in to find everyone scrambling for information. We were all watching the news and stepping away to call wives and friends in the NY area, trying to gain any info possible.
Nobody was hysterical. Nobody was excited or loud. As we learned more, everyone just had a deep, seething anger. While most of us were southern, it was still an attack on our country. How dare someone attack OUR new Yorkers?
We did not know what was happening in the big picture. We all had hurricane kits and ammo. We went home later that afternoon and glued ourselves to our computers and TVs for a few days.
One of our guys was Israeli. There had been rumor for a few years of his checkered past in Israel. Nobody ever asked and he said very little. He solemnly told us he was waiting for a call. It came about 45 minutes later. He had to go. I saw him a few months later and did not ask. He did not tell.
TLDR. I was in Orlando. It sucked.

30,000 feet up on a Delta flight. Diverted to Dallas with no explanation....had a hellish 24 hours trying to get back to BR. If we woukd have left Baton Rouge 10 mins later we would have never left the ground.
Had I known it was my last easy day through security I would have enjoyed it more....

I was sleeping in my apartment in lake charles when my alarm clock came on. Was kind of puzzled why it sounded like a news broadcast instead of music. When I realized what was being said, I went into the living room, and turned on the tv in time to see the plane hit the south tower live. I was a student at McNeese, skipped class that day.

Just got some good sleep between two night shifts. It was a Tuesday or a Thursday?
My mom called to wake me up. TV was on and every channel was already covering events. I woke up girlfriend then went and woke up my cop roommate. Told him to watch TV. He may get called in.
Creepiest for me was driving up US59 past airport. And NOTHING was moving. Empty skies.

Had my 1y.o. son in the car headed to daycare then on to work and was listening to "106.7 The End" when Rob Ryan broke in and said a passenger plane had hit one of the Twin Towers. At 1st I thought it was a really crappy joke, but then realized he was sincere. Turned around at City Park and went back home and watched it for the rest of the day. At some point I looked at my son, and later my wife, and thanked god for what I had because thousands were never going to see their families or family members again.

Not sure how to say this, but I was doing many things at that time of my life that severely impacted my memory in a negative way. Very often in lake charles, people recognize me, and I have no idea who they are even when they tell me their name. Things are much different now, but my memory of that entire day is so vivid that it could have been yesterday.
