I worked at a hospital in the Houston Medical Center. It was so weird to look up and see no planes in the sky, hear very little chatter and laughter in the halls, and seeing people just trying to get through the day and back home to their families.
I drove in to Anchorage later that day. I lived about 55 miles away, and they had downtown closed off. It was the must surreal thing I had seen in a while. Apparently due to a miscommunication, a KAL plane coming to Anchorage told ATC they had been hijacked. They shut the main core of the city down, and diverted the plane to Whitehorse, YT.
Both American and Canadian authorities authorized the plane to be shot down. Fortunately it wasn't.

ATC instructed the flight to change its transponder code to 7500, the universal signal for hijack, expecting that, if they had not been hijacked, the pilots would respond to that effect. Instead, they simply complied with the instruction, which ATC took as confirmation that the flight had indeed been hijacked.[2][4] Worried that a possible hijacked plane might strike a target in Alaska, Governor Tony Knowles ordered the evacuation of large hotels and government buildings in Anchorage. At nearby Valdez, (also in Alaska), the U.S. Coast Guard ordered all tankers filling up with oil to head out to sea. Lt. Gen. Norton Schwartz, who was in charge of the NORAD planes that scrambled to shadow Flight 85, told reporters in 2001 that he was prepared to order the South Korean airplane to be shot down before it could attack a target in Alaska.[1]
With NORAD telling Anchorage ATC that it would shoot down the airliner if it came near any potential targets, these controllers informed Flight 85 to avoid all population centers and head out of the country to Whitehorse, Yukon. NORAD promptly called Canadian authorities seeking the go-ahead to shoot the plane down over Canada:
"I said, 'Yes, if you think they are terrorists, you call me again but be ready to shoot them down.' So I authorized it in principle, It's kind of scary that... [there is] this plane with hundreds of people and you have to call a decision like that.... But you prepare yourself for that. I thought about it -- you know that you will have to make decisions at times that will [be] upsetting you for the rest of your life".
—2001 Prime Minister Jean Chrétien[3]
Ninety minutes after the South Korean pilots changed their transponder signal to the 7500 hijacked code, the plane landed safely in Whitehorse. Canadian officials evacuated all schools and large buildings before the plane landed.[5] On the tarmac, Flight 85 was greeted by armed Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers who, after interrogating the pilots, learned the whole ordeal was caused by a translation error.[5] The South Korean pilot stated that he had been ordered by Air Traffic Control to change the transponder signal and Air Traffic Control confirmed having done so.

Was driving 190 near the New Roads/Marksville exit when the radio cut to live coverage. Was at my facility in New Roads to see the second plane hit live.
I was transported mentally back to 7th grade...played hooky from school that day. Was eating cheerios watching a shuttle launch itself into oblivion. Live. I just remember thinking, "is that supposed to happen?" Cuz there was only deafening silence from the announcer. I remember the little skip the film makes a few seconds after the explosion...not realizing until years later it was the sound, delayed, hitting the camera.
Had the same gut - sick feeling watching the 2nd tower hit.
After I saw the first jumper, I couldn't watch anymore until the buildings themselves started to fall.
How could anyone ever forget that?

Its kinda weird how its 14 years ago. I remember being in the 2nd grade equivalent of ISS in the principals office in my school and the principal tuned on the TV after the first tower was hit and he told me it was probably just a terrible accident. Well at 9:03am when the 2nd plane hit, everyone knew it wasn't an accident. After that he told me to go back to class. We were later dismissed from school at around 11am that day and after we got home we watched the rest of it happen on TV. My dad ended up using all of his remaining vacation days and sick/personal days for the year to assist in recovery efforts down in NYC for a few weeks after the attacks.

Mr. Marsh 5th grade class. About to start math and mr McCracken comes in from next door to tell him. Both were in the reserves. Mr marsh didn't turn the tv off all day. Kids kept getting checked out but I was one of like 5 who stayed the whole day. Even went to football practice that day and only had 7 kids there so it was cancelled. I remember every part of that day. For weeks after our school played proud to be an American over the intercom in the morning and everyone would sing along.

At the time I worked for a NAPA auto parts store. I remember thinking that it had to be some horrible accident until the second plane hit. I remember cancelling the plans I had that night since I'm lucky enough that today is my birthday lol..

In the office. At the time I was working on the contract for the Air Force that operated and maintained their ground tracking stations located around the world in the Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN). Didn't get a lot of sleep the next couple of weeks. Was basically in the office 12 - 16 hours a day.

I was working in the ER in Mandeville. We were watching on television. I'll never forget a Medicaid mother was complaining about every watching Television. She had her 3 yo Crystal in the ER for a cold. She didn't go to the pediatrician's office because there was a $5 co-pay back then

One shell square in NOLA. They evacuated the building shortly thereafter.
I was on the roof of the World Trade Mart sometimes called the World Trade Center. They evacuated it as well. I remember watching all the planes line up at the airport and just park on the grass or wherever they could find a place.

I was on the school bus in first grade going to school listening to what was happening on the bus radio. I went into class telling everyone a plane had hit a building in New York and my teacher told me to stop talking about it
