this is all on the owner. Sit, stay, heel, down. All very easy commands that can be started at a very young age

get some sort of sporting breed
quote:
-Have an average sized yard, but the dog would also come into the home.
not a problem for any dogs. Get a wire cage kennel and crate train and you wont have a problem
quote:
-A little shedding is okay, but not looking for a Husky.
you'll get the summer shed from most dogs but you'd have to be a real lazy owner to not be able to deal with it. A quick sweep or vaccum every couple days and some combing will help.

-I've heard some breeds are very destructive when they are bored.
excersise is key and can make puppy ownership MUCH more enjoyable for you. Just spend some time in the morning and evenings playing fetch, running, walking, etc and you'll in turn have a much more relaxed dog in your home. I have a <2yr old German Wirehair Pointer so trust me I know what it takes to calm a dog down.

The dog would need to be okay with spending some time alone
again, crate training is your best friend, just be mindful of their bladder control when they are young.
quote:
We'd of course take the dog to whatever events (sporting events and whenever the wife and I can sneak away to our local corner pub whenever we can).
socializing at a young age with people and other dogs is crucial and something I did well with mine.
And another thing. COLLAR CONDITION. It's a wonderful teaching tool when used correctly and can really straighten out a stubborn dog (like mine)
Here's my boy, Fitz.

Can't beat a Golden Retriever. They're great with children, obedient, very friendly, so they're usually not good watchdogs, and usually handle being alone very well. I was introduced to the breed four years ago, and now have three rescue Goldens.

Nope. Just knew you fished from previous posts.
Thinking about getting a Brittany or GWP myself and was just curious how he/she was on a boat.

I have a schnauzer and he has been a good dog. Very loyal and was not Bad about tearing stuff up. No shedding but hard headed to all get out. We decided our next will be something else.

Probably a retired fighting pit bull. They are quite nice and usually appreciative of having innocent fun with kids.

Pit bull. Only true baws get em

Mine is a PITA. Always up in my shite and pacing around. He's fine on booze cruises but I leave him back when I'm actually trying to fish.

Belgian Tervuren had one as a kid best dog ever. RIP Tramp
If you can find the show The Alaskan Bush People, a Belgian Tervuren is the family's dog.
