None of that means he was a "puppet of the pope." He wisely used alliances, like any good leader, but at no time was he ever beholden to the pope.

The pope tried to make him give fealty (legally anyway) with the aforementioned Donation of Constantine, but Charles refused.

They are.

And now honestly after reading and watching a lot about them, I can see the value they have to Great Britain as a non-partisan and apolitical point of national unity and pride. The people may bicker between Tories and and Labour but they are more than united in their support of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. Hell, that's the point of their national anthem being "God save the queen!"

As a rule, I dislike all monarchs from around the time of when the Mayflower landed at Plymouth Rock up until present day. frick having a king or a queen.

But if I had to say which was my favorite I’d probably say King David or King Solomon.

Charlemagne crowned himself rather than let the Pope do it. Yet, in other ways, he was rather humble. He sang in the choir in the back of the group, not the front. His crown and vestments were relatively simple.

Even after he christianized most of Gaul, contracted monks to copy ancient manuscripts, built churches and schools, and mandated the use of a standard alphabet, he could still raid a village like few others.

I misread your response, I thought you said "I do" to the claim he was a puppet of the Pope not "I do" to the statement "Who knows"
