Don't tell anyone.

In my organic chem class one of my friends was stumped on a problem so instead guessing and getting it wrong he drew a cartoon of little muscle men and weaklings fighting it out to represent the chemical reaction. Of course he got the problem wrong but before handing the test grades out the teacher showed the class his answer. It received many laughs. The dude is a dentist today.

The Mole

While I found a reference, the analogy is really stupid.

But there is really no formula.

One mole of an element has 6.02214076×10^²³ atoms. One mole of water has 6.02214076×10^²³ water molecules.

One dozen eggs as 12 eggs.

Right, but the greater question he's trying to ask (but struggling to do so) is how the mole relates to unit conversion. That is, he's used to plugging in Avogadro's constant when doing unit conversion but doesn't understand why.

A mole is the number of molecules in a substance with the same mass as 12g of Carbon 12. It’s used as a conversion factor when trying to figure out exactly how much of substance x you need to make an amount of substance y after a chemical reaction.

Q: What do you call Avocado's Number of Atoms?

A: A Guacamole !

There. My one and only Chemistry Joke.

Suppose you have a mole of moles (6.02 x 10^23 of the little animals).

Now bury the mole of moles at the waists with just their little upper bodies and head sticking up.

Get on your lawnmower and run over the moles.

Now you have a mole of molasses.

This is the statement I don’t understand. So, why don’t you say the following is true?

1 dozen eggs X 6.022 times 10^23 eggs/ 1 dozen

6.022 times 10^23 eggs = 1 dozen eggs? 1 dozen eggs = 12 eggs

6.02 x 10^23 eggs = 1 mole of eggs

I'm not sure what you were trying to convey here.

What's even bigger than Avogadro's Number?

Avogadro's Wife's number.
