Big Oil - Little Hole

Could someone who has some engineering experience or fluid/flow background please explain how in the world BP and the Coast Guard expected any oil to flow through 2, 1 inch holes and end up in a riser and flow to the surface.
From my simple mind, trying to flow oil and gas through a 1 inch hole seems stupid at best. OF COURSE IT GOT CLOGGED UP.
Just like my Frappacino when sucking on a small straw and ice clogs it up.

They dropped the ball when they pinched the riser off instead of taking the time to make the clean cut with the diamond cutter. Now they're screwed.
