i dont think so, they're not pussies and they express what they feel themselves and deal with the conditions given to them cause theyre making money

Probably some of the skilled labor, like welders, electricians etc. Like it is in some plants. Not sure if they bought into the union thing offshore. Just conjecture on my part.

I think he means he is researching it for his job.
At least that's how I took it.

No there is no union offshore or onshore in the US. There are several countries that do have unions though but Americans can not join.
I have mixed feeling on the union issue in some ways it would help and others it would drag the industry down. We are very safety oriented now and with thousands of lawsuit we have some protection for workers. They can't just fire someone anymore without a reason and they as well as yourself are responsible for your safety.
They do however make moves like bump people back for no reason, not pay you overtime, hold people back from promotions because they don't like them or don't won't to lose them off their rig.

I've worked in countries with unions and it is definitely not something I'd want in the US. The only purpose I could tell it served was to slow progress. It made not visible difference wrt safety.

There are plenty of unions in the downtream sector (refining, petrochem, chemical manufacturing).

No. But when "O" puts pressure on them, they will be happy to allow unions
