Here is a pretty good discussion of this poor decision. Note that one of these Dutch skimmers can collect in 1 day the total amount skimmed to date since the spill started. Instead, we went out valiantly chasing this plume using boom tied onto the rigging of shrimp boats, much less effective and directly exposing more individuals to the oil.
IMO, if the Feds had not prevented deployment of this capability, BP might not have been using dispersant and much of the oil could have been collected near ground zero. Someone should investigate the Federal government instead of the other way around. We have met the enemy, and it is us.
